Cycle/Recycle

Cycle/Recycle Cycle Recycle, located in Winston-Salem, refurbishes bikes to provide to kids and adults through community partners.

We operate in a dual capacity as a vital part of Gift Mart and as a year-round entity in order to collaborate with and increase our local cycling community. Our mission is to enable kids and families (especially those in financially tight times and economic constraints) to benefit from safe bike riding. Since 2015 over 350 new and recycled bikes have been provided to under-served individuals and f

amilies. Cycle Recycle is developmental in nature for empowerment, education, and personal development. Our vision is to continue to grow the collaboration with WSPD, firefighters, YMCA, BBBS, SPARK Community, Foster Care and current
partners to provide family bike rides, riding rodeos and bike repair opportunities.

Today we gave bikes to 4 people from CwD. Each one shared his story of difficult circumstances in breaking out of the grasp of being unhoused. All were staying temporarily with a friend or family. We shared the reason for giving away bikes as a gift from God out of His redeeming love. One man stood out to me. He revealed that he struggles from a mental illness and is in a therapy group. He struggles with relationships and tries to avoid people. I sat down beside him, and he opened up to me. I shared with him how riding a bike may be life-changing for him, as he rides in the countryside and experiences the joy and freedom of nature and listens for God's voice - just the two of them. I saw him relax with a big smile on his face. "I know," he said. "I thank you for this bike." 2355

Ah, these two young adults are in love. Our liaison with City with Dwellings, Josh Boles, referred this charming couple to get bikes and helmets. They are fairly new to W-S and want to be able to ride together on greenways and trails. They both picked mountain bikes. 2351

We met Kyla, an 8-y.o. who was struggling to ride her bike with 2 flat tires at Salem Ridge Apartments. Kathleen is a resident there who created a bike path for the kids who had no safe place to ride. We picked up Kyla's and one other broken bike to refurbish like new. Bill took them home and brought them back today. Kyla ran to us with excitement and a big smile as she rode her "new" bike around the complex. Kathleen Ramich stands by 5 broken and abandoned bikes that we took back to our warehouse to try to refurbish to give away to some kids in need. 2349

Three men, three different stories. One has applied for disability and afraid to work at all. One had his bike stolen several months ago. One is looking for work as a DJ locally. God loves them all. We loved on them and encouraged them how each can move forward with his new bike, helmet, vest and bike lock. How can a bike make a difference? How does a bike offer you a new life to break out of old and worn out ways? How does this gift from God speak to each man where he is? 2347

Mike Swain, a volunteer at South Fork Elementary, picked up 6 bikes this morning. The top student in each grade, K - 5th, who has read the most is awarded a bike. I have no idea how one measures how much students read. 2344

Someone forwarded this video to me, because it is so relevant and relatable to all of us regarding how a bike changes lives. Cycle/Recycle has been so blessed to give away over 2300 bikes to people in need so that their lives can be changed.

Another amazing Tuesday. CwD brought 5 individuals to us, 3 people needed bikes and 2 needed a new tire for the bike they had received earlier. All three shared their stories about hardships that they could not control that led them to their current status. God once again showed me that homelessness is sometimes not fully due to bad decisions or bad behavior. South Fork School then came by to pick up 25 bikes for 5th graders who reached a certain achievement level in their math scores. I love that we can provide an incentive to kids to improve reading and math scores. 2338

Cycle/Recycle is busy collecting used bikes and refurbishing them to give away to people in need. Most bikes require new tubes and tires in addition to other parts. Average cost of one bike repair is $40-50. We need to fundraise in order to replenish our parts inventory to keep up the demand. Your donation of money is greatly appreciated. Please go to the QR code on our flier to access the Cycle Recycle/Love Out Loud website to give.
