LET’S TALK SUPPLY!
After the removal of the placenta, progesterone levels drop drastically which signals the body to convert milk production from endocrine (hormone) control to autocrine control (nursing or pumping). Your body natural makes milk starting at 20 weeks gestation. First milk is referred to as colostrum. Milk production operates as supply vs demand. Once progesterone levels drop, prolactin levels begin to increase with breast stimulation. Prolactin is referred to as the “milk making hormone”.
Depending on your situation, breasts must be stimulated via baby or pump at least 8 times a day. Why? Your baby typically would eat at least 8 times a day unless cluster-feeding or unwell. The more you stimulate breasts, the more signals you send to your brain to continue to keep the milk factory going. Over time it regulates and produces what your baby needs!
If you or anyone you know needs help with mill production, seek a lactation consultant for help! Pstt, pstt, we have one within our organization, our ED!
