LET’S TALK SUPPLY!

After the removal of the placenta, progesterone levels drop drastically which signals the body to convert milk production from endocrine (hormone) control to autocrine control (nursing or pumping). Your body natural makes milk starting at 20 weeks gestation. First milk is referred to as colostrum. Milk production operates as supply vs demand. Once progesterone levels drop, prolactin levels begin to increase with breast stimulation. Prolactin is referred to as the “milk making hormone”.

Depending on your situation, breasts must be stimulated via baby or pump at least 8 times a day. Why? Your baby typically would eat at least 8 times a day unless cluster-feeding or unwell. The more you stimulate breasts, the more signals you send to your brain to continue to keep the milk factory going. Over time it regulates and produces what your baby needs!

If you or anyone you know needs help with mill production, seek a lactation consultant for help! Pstt, pstt, we have one within our organization, our ED!

Don’t hesitate to reach out via email, DM or comment below! You can do this momma!

Many women during postpartum recovery suffer from postpartum depression (PPD).What causes it? Hormonal changes can trigger symptoms due to drastic drops in estrogen and progesterone post-delivery. Mothers can experience ‘baby blues’ during first few days postpartum, but symptoms of PPD can linger for two weeks or more.(1)

Baby blues symptoms: mood swings, feelings of sadness, anxious, overwhelmed; crying spells, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping. PPD can begin within first month and last up to a year after birth.(1)

Lack of social support is one of the most significant contributors to PPD. Women need support postpartum that should last longer than the first two weeks after birth. Check in on your mommy friends! Visit, call, send care packages and reach out to local resources for assistance if you or someone you know has lingering symptoms of PPD.

You are not alone! We are here for you!!

Your journey is YOUR journey! Often, as a lactation consultant, I tend to hear something along the lines of “well, my mother did this or my sister fed for this long.” Those individuals mean well but they are not you and are not going through the storm you’re going through. Even if you’re having a positive experience as a mother, it is still your journey! We cannot compare ourselves to others as each of us shine in our own time! Stick to doing what’s best for you and your family. You got this momma!
