Shannon County First Responders

Directions

Shannon County First Responders This page is to communicate with our communities about emergency medical issues and safety. In an emergency call 911.

We represent the volunteer emergency medical service in the county, NOT the fire or police departments. Who are the Shannon County First Responders? It seems like the media calls everyone a “first responder” these days, but in Shannon County “First Responder” means a well trained volunteer who will come to your side to help in a medical emergency 24/7. The First Responders live and work in Birch Tree, Eminence, and Winona and have a support and training relationship with Mercy Healthcare. The fire departments provide logistical support and Mercy provides supplies and training. The Shannon County Sheriff’s Office dispatches responders through the same radio system used for law enforcement and fire response. All First Responders have at least “Emergency Medical Responder” training, which is the next training level below EMT, although some are trained and certified to the EMT level or higher as well. Some have taken the training course with the intention of becoming Shannon County First Responders, others have previous emergency medical training from careers in Law Enforcement, Firefighting, nursing, the military or Conservation and want to put that training to use serving their communities. There are First Responders with as much as thirty years’ emergency medical experience and others who are just starting out. Generally if you call 911 for an ambulance the operator will ask if you’d like First Responders also. They can often arrive before the ambulance and begin care. They do not administer medications, but can provide oxygen, splinting, check vital signs and even administer CPR in the unfortunate event that becomes necessary. They are trained to assist ambulance personnel and can summon additional medical resources such as a helicopter if necessary, as well as communicate with the ambulance by radio so they know what to expect and prepare for. Due to medical confidentiality rules, you won’t ever see a detailed account of the First Responders' actions on this page, and any postings containing such information will be deleted. However, they have pulled people from burning car wrecks, delivered babies, performed CPR, and treated everything from bee stings to heart attacks and from strokes to skinned knees. Their training is at their own expense and they are never paid a penny for their time. If you know one, you might want to say thanks. If you see a donation can around the county, you might want to donate to help purchase supplies. Also you can click on the "Shop Now" link at the top and donate some equipment. If you have medical training, you might want to join up. You might lose a little sleep now and then, but you’ll know you are serving your community.

During our last First Responder meeting on Wednesday September 23rd an issue was brought up from multiple members of the organization.

This issue being that there are not enough first responders in certain parts of the county to cover every call. (Mainly in the Birch Tree and the Winona area)

With this being said we are reaching out to the community to see if there would be anyone interested in joining our organization.

If you are interested in joining or have any questions please contact us via this page or contact:

As president of the Shannon county first responders I'm not one that needs or even wants , but I will give credit where credit is due. Now, being I'm from Winona I don't run a lot of the calls in the neighboring towns of eminence and birch tree but I've heard several calls over the radio and it sounds like you guys are doing amazing, it is greatly appreciated. The last week or so the Winona crew has had some very intense calls where everything had to come together quickly and I couldn't be prouder of how you all responded with urgency and compassion and that also includes Winona fire and rescue anything we needed or they saw needed done they were on it. So thank you all for your dedication, hard work, and sacrifice it is greatly appreciated.

Today, Pulaski County FRSST joins first responders across our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the extraordinary courage shown in the moments and days that followed.

Among the 2,977 victims killed that day were 411 emergency responders who answered the call:

343 FDNY firefighters
23 New York City Police Department officers
37 Port Authority Police Department officers
8 EMTs and paramedics

They ran toward danger while thousands were trying to escape. We also honor the emergency telecommunicators, emergency managers, military personnel, healthcare professionals, rescue workers, and countless others who served throughout the response, recovery, and aftermath.

As a team representing first responders from across multiple disciplines, Pulaski County FRSST recognizes that the impact of September 11 did not end when the fires were extinguished. Survivors, families, responders, and their communities have carried the physical and emotional effects of that day for more than two decades, and many responders have since lost their lives to World Trade Center-related illnesses.

Today, we remember those we lost, honor those who answered the call, and stand beside those who continue to carry the weight of that day.

We remember. We honor. We stand together.

The bottom half of Missouri isn't blushing... but it's still painted shades of pink due to the Extreme Heat. We might sound like a broken record with these heat safety tips, but we'd rather repeat ourselves than have someone suffer a heat-related illness.
✅Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
✅Drink plenty of water, sports drinks, or natural fruit juices to stay hydrated.
✅Avoid alcohol and beverages that contain caffeine as these tend to be dehydrating.
✅If outdoor activity is unavoidable, take plenty of breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned environment away from the heat.

Yesterday ,June 22, a local EMT class graduated and officially became certified EMTs in the State of Missouri. Congratulations to each of them on their hard work and dedication.

In recognition of this achievement, we'd like to share a few photos from a training exercise our organization was honored to participate in. We were joined by several volunteer fire departments, including Eminence FD, Winona FD, and Birch Tree FD.
