Winona County Relay For Life The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest and most impact fundraising event to end cancer. What Happens at a Relay Event?

There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below:

Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers

at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Cancer doesn't sleep and neither do we!

Relay for Life of Winona County will be held on the Winona State University campus in McCown Gymnasium on Friday, April 21st, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
This fundraiser for the American Cancer Society has been held in Winona for over 30 years, originally as the Rivertown Shuffle. The goal of Relay is to support the American Cancer Society in their mission to end cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient and family services. Luminaria bags with names of survivors and those who have passed from cancer will be made into a track in McCown Gymnasium. There will be a short program to honor cancer survivors as well as food for sale and games.
Once again, the WSU Colleges Against Cancer club will spearhead the effort. Clubs from Winona State’s campus and from St. Mary’s University will form teams and fundraise before and during the event. Community members, families and businesses are encouraged to join in by creating a team of their own.

Tomorrow on , give back by signing up or fundraising to give hope to people like Rick, a colon and kidney cancer survivor. 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, so our fight is more critical than ever.
