Since the 16th century, Europeans have depicted Native Americans in a traditional European manner. In the 19th century, the War Department commissioned portraits of Native American delegations, such as Mo-Hon-Go, to Washington. Painted by Charles Bird King, these subjects were posed in ways that were familiar to Bird and his white audience. Interest in these paintings was so high that the original paintings were reproduced as prints for mass consumption.

We were excited to host the second DAR Genealogy Research Institute at DAR Headquarters last week. The Institute featured fascinating lectures by preeminent genealogists including DAR staff. It was an incredible week—and one of our goals for this year's event was to make it accessible to Daughters who were unable to travel to D.C. in early May. Now, in the Institute's second year, I am thrilled to share that we have found a way for more Daughters and other genealogy enthusiasts to learn from these experts. For a limited time, you may purchase virtual access to six one-hour lectures from the Institute, including those presented by LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, outlining her award-winning study of the descendants of an enslaved African American family using traditional research methods and DNA testing; D. Joshua Taylor explaining the digital collections available in state archives and other digital collections; and presentations by Victor S. Dunn on the use of court records and tax records. Please visit https://blog.dar.org/genealogy-research-institute-virtual-component for more details and the link to purchase virtual access. The cost is $185 for unlimited viewing of these from May 15 to Aug. 15.

Traditionally we pause at the end of each year to reflect on what we have accomplished together as a Society. These highlights are just a small taste of the many ways that the DAR is celebrating Stars and Stripes and making a difference across the country. From honoring Patriots around the world to returning to in-person Congress, the National Society has carried forward our mission promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism with dedication and enthusiasm. We are grateful for each of our members and proud of the millions of service hours that these collective accomplishments represent. Please visit https://blog.dar.org/looking-back-2022 to join us in a look back at 2022. We have so much to be thankful for as we Rejoice in our DAR Ties of Service and Friendship! Your DAR executive officers and I wish you a happy New Year, and we look forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2023!
