Louisiana summer is in full swing and our furbabies are just as hot as we are! For an easy frozen treat mix hot water and peanut butter until smooth, pour into greased ice trays, and freeze overnight. Once frozen the cubes can be removed from trays and stored in a freezer storage bag for a couple of weeks. Peanut butter works great but this can also be done with chicken or beef broth, and it is a great use for leftover gravy!

The fireworks have started in most places so be sure your pets are safe! Even the best behaved pets will climb a fence or run outside unexpectedly so please be sure they are secure. If outdoor pets are frightened bring them inside if possible. If they normally go outside without a leash make an exception and leash them; a startled pet may run unexpectedly. Add another layer of safety by not opening the door to outside with your pet in the room unless they are already leashed and the leash is securely held. A lot of pets are lost during fireworks because they run away out of fear so please do whatever you can to keep them safe. For pets that are extremely stressed by fireworks you may want to speak with your vet about prescribing a light sedative for home use. If you opt for a sedative make sure you follow your vet’s instructions carefully.

Don't forget about our used book sale on Saturday, November 3! Paperbacks are $1, hardbacks $2, and children's 2/$1. All proceeds go to vet bills for rescued dogs.

We still need book donations; they can be dropped off at Kathy Morris Realty or Superior Tire (ask for Ricky). We can also arrange for pickup or drop off at other locations, just call 318-435-6471.

We are also very much in need of volunteer help the day of the sale. For the morning it will be setting up tables and unloading and unpacking books and that afternoon whatever is left has to be boxed up and loaded. It shouldn't take more than an hour each time and more volunteers means less time. Don't forget to share!

Summer has settled in and we are looking at some very dangerous high temperatures. If you are not sure about your pet's safety and comfort the easiest way is to ask yourself how you would feel outside in a fur coat you can't take off. Just like dangerously cold temperatures, it's best to bring your pets inside. If you can't it is crucial for them to have good shaded areas and unlimited fresh water. A good fan helps and many dogs will enjoy a plastic wading pool with plenty of cool, clean water. You can get a pool for under $10 at Walmart or just about any dollar store.

Our pets like cold treats in hot weather as much as we do. One of the easiest is to mix peanut butter and water until it is a thick liquid, pour it into ice cube trays and freeze it. Chicken broth works great too and for all of us southerners this is a way to use leftover gravy since it doesn't keep very well in the fridge.

Always remember your pet's tolerance for heat is the same or less than yours. If you can't bring them inside make sure they have what they need to stay safe outside. The most important things are good shade and a constant supply of cool, fresh water.

Miss Sally will tell you how enjoyable a wading pool is; she uses hers several times a day:
