Health Friday. Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center found biological changes in animals exposed to microplastics even though their organs look completely normal. That is how many chronic diseases, like cancer, begin—undetected.

Tips Tuesday. Hefty is ending the distribution of orange plastic bags by Dec 2026. It will stop collecting orange bags by June 2027. It recently settled a lawsuit in Arizona for $212,000 over their bags being marketed with misleading recycling symbols. It’s good to end the greenwashing.

Health Friday. Microplastics are distributed in the body depending on the size. Microplastics enter the bloodstream through the intestinal lining or lung blood barrier. They cannot pass through the intestinal lining if they are bigger than 0.5 mm, or 500,000 nm, and they can’t pass through the lung blood barrier if bigger than 400 nm. That means bigger microplastics can pass through the intestinal lining more readily, and then they accumulate around the heart and internal organs. The smaller the microplastics, the more of them gets distributed, and hence the more severe is the toxic effects to the heart.

Health. Researchers found that there are more and bigger microplastics in the spinal disc than in the bone and knee joints. The samples were taken from patients undergoing knee surgery and herniated disc surgery.

Health Friday. Polyethylene used in food packaging, food storage containers and cups, increased signs of fatty liver disease when paired with a high fat, sugar and cholesterol diet. Fatty liver disease is when extra fat builds up in the liver, causing fatigue, pain in the right side of belly, swollen legs or belly, and jaundice.

Health Friday. A new study looks at different shapes of nano- and microplastics and the breathing rate to determine where they end up in the human respiratory tract from the nose to the deeper parts of the lungs.

Health Friday: A new study found that 84% of serious heart attack patients have microplastics in their blood, compared with 40% of chronic coronary disease where the arteries have narrowed, and 32% of people with normal arteries. Smokers are 6 times more likely to have microplastics in their blood.
