Meet NOS's New Board Member, Dan!

Dan Hayes was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona, where he developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors through hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and motorcycle racing. After moving to Las Vegas in 1997 and building a career with Southwest Gas, he relocated to Winnemucca in 2017 with his wife and two daughters. The family quickly embraced Northern Nevada's outdoor lifestyle and remain active in exploring and enjoying the region. Dan also dedicated 14 years to coaching youth softball, where he helped young athletes build confidence, character, and life skills. His commitment to youth development, combined with his passion for the outdoors and conservation, inspired his involvement with Nevada Outdoor School and its mission to connect people with nature and foster environmental stewardship.

đź“Łđź“Ł What's New at NOS!

On July 14, Nevada Outdoor School partnered with the Humboldt County Library to provide an interactive water filtration lesson focused on outdoor preparedness and safety. Participants learned why and when it is important to filter and purify water while exploring different methods used during hiking and camping adventures. NOS demonstrated a variety of filtration and purification tools, including pump filters, drip system filters, water bottle filters, purification tablets, and LifeStraws. Participants also worked with the library to create a DIY water filter using natural earth materials, providing a hands-on opportunity to better understand the filtration process. The activity helped youth build confidence and gain important outdoor skills for safely accessing water while exploring the outdoors.

Learn how to make an effective mosquito trap using simple materials you can use at home. The City of Carlin provide everything you need to build your own trap!

This family-friendly workshop is a great way to learn a practical skill while helping make our community more comfortable to enjoy throughout the season.
