You created a beautiful garden to attract and support pollinators. Take the next step and manage your gardens and landscapes to further support these important members of our community. Tolerate some insect pest damage and wait for predaceous and parasitizing insects to help manage the problem. Add a bird bath to help attract songbirds to your landscape as they will also help manage garden pests. 96% of terrestrial North American birds eat insects as part of their diet. Create a toad abode to support slug- and insect-eating toads in the garden. Find out more ways to attract and support pollinators by registering for my June 3 webinar, Managing Your Landscape with Pollinators in Mind, with gardening expert and author Melinda Myers. Itโ€™s free but you must register at:

Enlist the help of toads in your efforts to manage mosquitoes. They eat lots of insects, including mosquitoes, slugs and snails.

Attract these natural predators to your garden by leaving some leaf litter under trees and shrubs and in the garden. Add a shallow saucer filled with chlorine-free water and place rocks in and around the water for added toad appeal.

Purchase a toad abode from a local potter or make your own from a ceramic or clay pot. Place it in a shady location near a garden filled with protein-rich insects. Set it directly on the soil and elevate one side with stones or use a cracked or broken pot that provides an entryway for the toad.
Reduce, or better yet, eliminate the use of pesticides that can be harmful to toads and kill the insects they like to eat.
Do use organic Summit Mosquito Dunks
- www.SummitResponsibleSolutions.com - in your water features and rain barrels to prevent mosquito larvae from becoming flying and biting adults. Made from naturally occurring soil bacteria, it will not harm the toads and only kills mosquito larvae. And donโ€™t worry, there will still be plenty of mosquitoes and other insects for the toads to feast on.
