Have you ever seen a jack in the pulpit go to seed?

Although this striking plant is most well-known for its early emergence in the spring, it also develops unusual berries as summer turns to fall. Jack in the pulpit berries have the consistency of a ripe tomato, with one to five seeds per berry. They are a great source of food for birds and small mammals, which will become increasingly important as we enter the cooler months.

Be on the lookout for jack in the pulpits in preserves with woodland and floodplain habitats, but be careful of handling them—the leaves and berries contain calcium oxalate which can irritate the skin.

When you see small yellow and brown spots surrounded by water-soaked borders your iris is suffering from fungal leaf spot disease. These spots may enlarge and eventually merge to form large dead areas, and severely infected leaves may die prematurely. Sanitation is often enough to manage the problem. Remove all infected leaves and flower stalks in fall to reduce the source of disease in next year’s garden.
