We're seeing far too many baby rabbits and squirrels that have been fed the wrong formula, overfed, underfed, or kept for days before reaching a rehabilitator.
The hardest part? Many of these babies never needed to be rescued in the first place. Baby squirrels can be reunited with their mother if they're simply given the chance. Rabbits need to stay in their nest for mom to feed, not for people to remove because they can't control their dog. Instead, people often scoop them up and start feeding them before calling for help. By the time they arrive here the damage is often irreversible.
If your house caught fire, you wouldn't want a neighbor with a garden hose—you'd call the fire department. If you were seriously injured, you wouldn't want someone treating you in their living room—you'd go to a hospital.
Wildlife deserves that same level of care. Before intervening, stop, research what to do, and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator first. A few minutes of patience and phone call can save a life.
