The Anson Future Workforce Initiative, a partnership between the Anson County Chamber of Commerce, Anson County Schools, and Our Future in UNiSON, has successfully completed its first cohort of business partners for the school year — helping to build a stronger, more connected local workforce pipeline.

Through this initiative, 8th grade students at Anson Middle School explored hands-on learning opportunities with local employers:
• Triangle Brick – understanding brick production and skilled trades
• Anson County Government – applying drones in public service
• Loba-Wakol – learning about adhesives and manufacturing careers
• Uwharrie Bank – exploring budgeting, finance, and banking pathways

Together, these experiences are connecting classroom learning to real-world careers — inspiring students to see their future right here in Anson County.

Big thanks to Uwharrie Bank's Amanda McFayden and Tina Townsend for an awesome financial literacy presentation to our 8th graders at Anson Middle School!

They sparked lively discussions with questions such as "How would you spend $100?" and "Needs vs. wants," then dove into a fun, hands-on budgeting activity using beans—the kids were engaged and learning key money skills!

Grateful for these community partners making a real impact. This marks the last of 4 businesses to present at Anson Middle School as part of the Anson Future Workforce Development Initiative—a collaboration between Anson County Schools, the Anson Chamber of Commerce, and Our Future in UNiSON.

We’re excited to share highlights from the October 20th Business & Finance Roundtable at South Piedmont Community College, coordinated by Our Future in UNiSON!

More than 50 education and industry leaders came together to strengthen business and finance career pathways across Union and Anson Counties. Skillfully facilitated by Pat Kahle, the session brought local voices to the table to identify skill gaps, align training with real workforce needs, and foster strong partnerships for the future.

Participants shared real-time feedback through their mobile devices, creating an interactive and forward-thinking discussion.

The Captain UNiSON costume design contest winners, held during the Monroe Latin Festival, have been announced. This contest challenged attendees at the Latin Festival to design a new costume for Captain UNiSON, the hero of the comic book The Daring Adventures of Captain UNiSON: College Misconceptions. The comic book focuses on Captain UNiSON’s efforts to fight misconceptions that keep students and adults from attending and completing college certifications and degrees.
The contest featured three age categories: under 10, 11-18, and over 18. This offered participants an opportunity to express their artistic talents and reinforce the message that higher education is attainable for all.
The contest winners in each category are:
• 10 and Under: Gabriela Rambal
• 11 to 18: Mayte Morales
• 18 and Over: Valeria Rangel
Our Future in UNiSON Project Coordinator Dr. Maria Lander presented the winners with a certificate of achievement and a $100 gift card as recognition for their creativity and contribution to the contest.

"Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you." -Aldous Huxley

No matter the interaction we have, it is likely an experience we will one day look back on. How we react to these interactions is vital to the after-effect they have on us as individuals.

Making the most of the situations we are in can lead to worthwhile experiences.
