We were off for Fall Break last week, so some of our families got together to head to two different Fall activities: Bengtson's Pumpkin Patch in Illinois and County Line Orchard here in NWI. They had fun on rides, picking pumpkins, playing in human-sized sensory bins, eating yummy Fall food, and learning all about the process of growing apples and pumpkins!

Last week, our students headed to Lake County Solid Waste Management District to participate in two educational sessions, learning about recycling, food waste, and using worms for compost. They did a number of hands-on activities, working together to complete each one. They had time to explore the different concepts and understand how their choices make an impact on the world around them. The field trips at LCSWD are perfect for Lake County groups since they are both super educational and free!

Our fall field trips are not complete without a trip to Garwoods Orchards to learn about their process of growing apples and distribution, picking apples, getting a pumpkin, and sampling donuts and apple c***r. It was a wonderful morning with friends and a tradition that we have continued for the past few years!

Last month, we headed over to Plum Creek Nature Center for our favorite all-day nature field trip! The kids were separated into two age groups and participated in different age-appropriate sessions that had them exploring the world around them and diving deep into topics! The younger kids learned all about animal adaptations with hands-on activities along the exercise trail, followed by an afternoon session learning about insects and catching them to observe. The older kids learned about reptiles with an opportunity to meet real ones, followed by learning at the pond in the afternoon and observing the critters that live there. It was a great day with so many learning opportunities. The educators at Plum Creek do such an amazing job and have super engaging activities for the kids!

Week 6, Fall 2026

Yesterday marked the halfway point in our semester - and wow, the weeks have seriously flown by! The weather was absolutely gorgeous yesterday so classes were able to get outside and recess was highly anticipated. We had an amazing day complete with learning, community building, and fun! It was our pajama day (a semester tradition) with donuts and bagels at snack time, plus a pizza lunch. An easy last day before Fall break next week.

Week 5, Fall 2026

We have really settled into the semester and gotten into weekly routine of co-op! The kids know where to go, have started to make friends, and are learning so much in all their classes. Each week is interesting, fun, engaging, and the perfect balance of kid chaos and calm moments. Our community is strong and dependable with people stepping up when and where needed. Our teachers come prepared with educational and hands-on activities to really drive the lessons home. Students are able to explore many topics every week and dabble in their interests.

This week, we ended co-op with three different age-appropriate classes from the Enviromobile, a mobile classroom from Lake County Solid Waste District where students learned about different aspects of recycling, landfills, and taking care of the Earth. Our under 5s jumped, danced, and were introduced to the basics of music with Kenny Ingram of Ingram Academy of Music.

A few weeks ago, we headed back to Marilyn's Bakery for a hands-on field trip! Each kid make their own individual pizza and kolache. We also learned about how they make their kolaches, saw the assembly line, and learned a bit about the history of the bakery. It was a very yummy morning!!
