October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month. The related awareness day falls on the last Saturday of the month, October 31 this year. It was started to push back on breed stereotypes, and it overlaps with Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
The stigma is loud. The misinformation is older than most of the dogs wearing the label. American Pit Bull Terrier is one breed, but āpit bullā gets used as a catch-all for a whole group of breeds that are shown here, and then some. That sloppy label doesnāt correct the misinformation. It spreads it. Each of these breeds is wonderful for its own reasons, and careless mixing and breeding isnāt doing any of them a favor. Once they all share one name, they all share one reputation, and plenty of good dogs wait longer because of it.
The point of this month is to judge the dog in front of you. Temperament, training, and how that individual is treated matter more than a label someone guessed at intake. Every dog is their own. We shouldnāt judge too harshly, or too quickly. Some are soft. Some are stubborn. Some need structure, patience, and a person who doesnāt quit on the first hard week. Some just want a couch. Same as people. A label is a terrible substitute for evidence.
If you have room in your home, come say hello. We would love for you to meet the animal, not the category. š¾
And if you already have one of these wonderful breeds, or a mix, and theyāre a rescue, drop their name, a photo, and what you love about them most in the comments. Thank you for loving the individual, not the label. š„°
