An iconic Windsor landmark that still stands today on the corner of 6th and Main Streets, the Porter House is a Queen Anne style home that was constructed in 1898 by Windsor’s own Dr. Frank Porter.

Dr. Porter was a pharmacist in Windsor for many years, first opening his pharmacy in 1894. After his first store was destroyed in a fire, he reopened a new storefront in 1901.

Mrs. Laura Walker, a 1914 graduate of Windsor High School, began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse near Keota before earning her degree from the Colorado State Teachers College in 1918.

She went on to become a beloved educator at the Whitehall Schoolhouse for several years, where she introduced a program teaching ten-minute classes throughout the day.

After a 17-year break and a move to Illinois, Mrs. Walker returned to teaching in 1942 at schools in Ogle County, Illinois.

A little over ten years after closing, demolition of the Great Western Sugar Factory in Windsor began in April 1977.

The factory, which opened in 1903, brought rapid growth to the town; and processed 600 tons of sugar beets daily and employed over 250 people. The factory closed in 1966, bringing a “gloom” over the town.

All that remains of the factory today is the chimney and a portion of the warehouse.

Show support for this historically unique project!

WSHS will present the statue project to the Windsor Town Board—a project that represents our history, our pride, and our community.
We’re asking for your support in the most powerful way possible:
by being there.
Attendance matters. A strong showing sends a clear message that this project is important, that it has community backing, and that it deserves to move forward—including the funding needed to bring it to life.
Your presence speaks louder than words.
Be there.
Be seen.
Be part of the legacy.
