On behalf of the Harvard Project family, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Zah family and the Navajo Nation. As a founding and longtime board member of Honoring Nations, Mr. Zah was a guiding light who put his love for the people first. He led by example, encouraging and empowering all of us to believe in each other and work together to strengthen our communities and tribal nations. He gifted us with his enduring vision, wisdom, humor, and humanity. We miss him immensely and wish him well on his journey home.

The Navajo Nation lost a political giant in Zah. 'It’s just a huge loss for the Navajo Nation. We have very few leaders on Navajo that could really dissect national and local political issues like Pete did'

The last few days have been filled with reading and listening to stories about the late Peterson Zah. I send my deepest condolences to Rosalind Zah and Family.

It seems everyone has their own personal history with the late Chairman and President. He was a fierce advocate and champion. No words can truly capture all that he did for the Navajo people.

My own history goes back to my late Nalí Hastíín who was an avid and passionate Zah supporter.

As a law student at ASU, I was a Zah Fellow and received the Zah Fellowship that put me through law school. The Peterson Zah Legacy Fellowship Program supports Navajo law students for 3 years at Arizona State University since the mid 90’s. It was his educational legacy that personally affected my ability to attend law school debt free and become a licensed attorney.

He dedicated his life and career to public service, the Navajo Nation, and Indian county. I did not know him well, but I had the pleasure of visiting with him a few years back. We attended a voter registration drive in Window Rock, AZ. I was there as a young state representative and was later into my pregnancy. He shared words of encouragement in my role. I was in awe of his ability to advocate for the importance of voter participation and redistricting. We chatted about politics and the importance of voting. He was a true leader and someone who I will always personally look up to.

Here’s a throwback to me, Chairman and President Zah, and Buu at the Window Rock parade back in 2018.

Diné College offers condolences to the family of Peterson Zah

TSAILE, AZ — Peterson Zah, the first Navajo Nation President and Chairman, and a champion for education passed away Tuesday. Zah advocated for education as a means to rebuild the Navajo Nation and was a fierce advocate for young people to get involved and make a difference.

“We have lost a real champion for education – all of education from early childhood through college,” said vice chairman of the Diné College board of regents Greg Bigman. “When I wanted to start a Foundation, he was one of the first people I reached out to. Almost immediately after that, Pete had lined up meetings with foundations and senior executives at Arizona State University to help us navigate this path.” Today, the Diné College Foundation is in its second year of existence. It’s all because of Zah said Bigman.

Such was the nature of Zah, he was committed to helping others first, especially if it benefited the Navajo Nation. Arizona State Senator Theresa Hatathlie added, “He always advocated to improve our school system and increase the number of students going to college. He understood the value of education and how it could transform lives.”

As a leader of the Navajo Nation, Zah spent a lifetime making college more accessible to all Navajos. “Today, we hear a lot about college access and equity, President Zah was talking about these issues decades before they became commonplace,” said Charles M. Roessel, president of Diné College. “He created more scholarship opportunities for students, held area universities accountable for the success of Native students and continually encouraged Navajo students to give back to their communities.”

Zah graduated from Phoenix Indian School and later attended earned his teaching degree from Arizona State University. Originally from Low Mountain, Arizona, he moved to Window Rock where he got his start in politics as a school board member.
