✨ Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Bill Dumont saw a St. Matthew’s bulletin looking for a volunteer with a truck. As he was recently retired and looking for something to do to help his community, he reached out to Shepherd’s Pantry. Four years later, Bill is still here and he’s become one of those volunteers who can always be counted on to jump in wherever he’s needed!

You might find Bill helping Robin with the meat distribution, making a pickup with his truck, filling bags, or just pitching in wherever an extra set of hands is needed. And it turns out he had a little head start on the bagging part! When a fellow volunteer was impressed with his grocery bag organization skills, he was asked which volunteer had trained him. Bill’s answer? His first job was bagging groceries when he was 16!

Bill loves being outdoors and is always finding something to keep himself busy. Even after a few injuries and having to slow down a bit, it doesn’t take him long to get back at it. He enjoys working with the other volunteers and has loved watching Shepherd’s Pantry grow over the years.

Bill and his wife, Lisa, have also had a long connection to St. Matthew’s. They were married there 48 years ago, at the original church. St. Matthew’s has been part of the Pantry’s story from the very beginning, providing the very first brown bag.

“We’re very lucky that we can eat what we want and help out people. We really do some good work here.” - Bill Dumont

Thank you, Bill, for always being willing to lend a hand, fill in wherever needed, and keep coming back to help. We’re lucky to have you as part of the Shepherd’s Pantry family! 🛒❤️🐑

✨Volunteer Spotlight✨

Meg Evoy is a valued member of the Shepherd’s Pantry family who has been giving her time and heart to our community for several years.

Meg first learned about Shepherd’s Pantry through a mutual friend and, having previously volunteered at other food pantries, felt drawn to continue giving back in a similar way.

She began volunteering on Monday mornings, helping with distribution, and soon became involved in assembling bags for our 7+ families at the warehouse. One of Meg’s favorite parts of volunteering is working alongside Diane and Karen and connecting with the clients she meets each week.

Whether she’s greeting someone at check-in, handing out coffee or household essentials, or simply taking a moment to listen, Meg treasures the opportunity to get to know people and hear their stories.

“Sometimes we may be the only people a client speaks with that day. Getting to know them and hearing their stories has been incredibly rewarding. I love giving back, but I get so much from it, too.” - Meg Evoy

Originally from British Columbia, Canada, Meg has even enjoyed discovering Canadian connections with some of the clients she has met along the way. She reminds us that it can be easier than we think for any of us to find ourselves needing a helping hand.

Meg’s kindness, compassion, and genuine connection with others make a meaningful difference at Shepherd’s Pantry.

Thank you, Meg, for all you do for our clients, our community, and the Shepherd’s Pantry family! 🛒❤️🐑

✨Volunteer Spotlight✨

For nearly two years, Jeff Gallant has been a familiar face at Shepherd's Pantry, helping make our drive-thru food distributions possible before most of us have even started the day.

Jeff first became involved after his wife spotted a Shepherd's Pantry posting looking for volunteers and he reached out to friends, Laurie and Steve Johnson, to learn more. At time, Shepherd’s Pantry needed someone willing to arrive early and help set up the drive-thru operation. Jeff walked through the door at exactly the right moment, filling a need that has made a lasting impact.

Today, Jeff has the early morning set up down to a science. In addition to preparing for Monday Distribution Days, he also serves as a substitute volunteer for our meat pickups, stepping in whenever needed to help keep food moving to the pantry.

When asked what he enjoys most about volunteering, Jeff's answer is simple: the people.

"The dedication of the people is outstanding, and it's impressive what Shepherd's Pantry does to help people out." – Jeff Gallant

Of course, every volunteer has one wish and Jeff's is for warm, sunny weather! As the volunteer helping set up before Monday Distributions begin, those cold, rainy mornings can be a challenge, but they never stop him from showing up with a smile and getting the job done.

Jeff likes to joke that he'd have to wait about 20 years before earning a Volunteer Spotlight. We're happy to say we didn't make him wait that long!

Thank you, Jeff, for your reliability, kindness, and willingness to jump in wherever you're needed. Shepherd's Pantry is stronger because of volunteers like you.

✨Volunteer Spotlight✨

For more than eight years, Arte Carew has been a dedicated member of the Shepherd's Pantry family, generously giving his time to help ensure our neighbors have food on their tables.

Helping others has always been part of who Arte is. Growing up, his father instilled in him the importance of serving those in need, often reminding him, "There are people who have less than we do, and we have to help." That lesson has stayed with him throughout his life.

Before joining Shepherd's Pantry, Arte volunteered through his local parish and with St. Vincent de Paul, helping provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to families in need. He later began picking up donated baked goods from a local Shaw's before becoming involved with Shepherd's Pantry. His first job with Shepherd's Pantry was the weekly meat pickups, and for years Arte faithfully collected meat donations from Hannaford, delivering them to the Windham Presbyterian Church to help prepare for Monday distributions.

When the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way the pantry operated, Arte continued volunteering as Shepherd's Pantry transitioned to drive-thru distributions, always willing to lend a helping hand.

To Arte, Shepherd's Pantry is much more than a place to volunteer.

"It's like another family. You meet so many wonderful people, everyone gets along, and you build friendships that last." – Arte Carew

One of the things Arte treasures most is the friendships he's built over the years. He says the volunteers become like family, united by a shared commitment to helping others and making a difference in the community.

Although he's currently taking a break from volunteering, Arte looks forward to the day he can return to the pantry and reconnect with everyone. We know our volunteers are looking forward to welcoming him back as well.

Arte, thank you for your years of dedicated service, your generous spirit, and the kindness you've shown to so many. Volunteers like you are the heart of Shepherd's Pantry, and we're grateful to have you as part of our family. 🐑❤️🛒
