On Saturday, our 'Helping Hands, Healing Paws' pet food pantry was in Commerce, as usual.
Our incredible volunteers and staff were there at 7am with a BUNCH of cat and dog food all bagged up and ready to give to those in need.
Families in crisis were able to come and get what they needed so that they could keep their pets and not surrender them at the shelter due to financial reasons.
That is the reason we provide the pet food at our pet food pantries...
We know times are hard and we do not want pets to suffer and their families to lose a furry family member because they don't have the money to feed them.
On Saturday, we were proud to provide for 115 dogs and 138 cats.
Do you know someone who needs us?
If so, please tell them that we are in Commerce on the second Saturday of every month, and Athens on the fourth Saturday of every month. Have them follow our page so that they can keep updated as to any changes to this service that we provide.
We stand in each location beside iServe Ministries who graciously provide food for families in need. Each location is a one stop shop of help.
We are proud to serve and we are blessed to bless.
If you would like to help us help others, please don't hesitate to get in touch, we would love to hear from you.

We didn't even have her for a month.
It was just 27 days.
Little Greta Garbo came to us after we saw her picture on the Walton County Shelter social media and were bombarded with requests by our supporters who just KNEW that this little girl was destined for Frankie and Andys Place.
They were absolutely right.
We went to see her, and found this little 17 year old poppet of a dog, shivering and scared in the shelter, with no clue why she had been callously dumped there by her owner.
We have been doing this for many years, long even before we opened Frankie and Andy's Place; we have rescued hundreds upon hundreds of dogs, and the thing that gets us every time we go to the shelter to look at a dog, is that every single one of them has no clue why they have been dumped.
"I was a loyal companion to my people my whole life, and then they dumped me when they bought a puppy".
"I nipped the kid next door because no one was there supervising him and he pulled my sore ear".
"No one taught me that it was wrong to jump up".
"They had a baby and dumped me. I wouldn't have hurt that baby if they'd just spent some time showing me what to do around her."
"I barked at strange people coming into the house and they said they couldn't stand the noise. I'm a German Shepherd, what did they think I was going to do? It's always been our job to be watchdogs unless we are taught otherwise".
And in Greta Garbo's case...
"I went blind and felt poorly, so instead of taking me to the vet and helping me navigate my new condition, they just dumped me at the shelter. At 17 years of age. I tried to be a good dog all my life, they cuddled me and loved on me all the time when I was perfect, small and cute, but when my eyes went cloudy and I started to stumble into things, they just got rid of me. Now....now when I needed them most. It was very noisy and very scary in there and all the surfaces were hard, it was a strange place for me so I couldn't find my water bowl."
I didn't ever want to be the person that wishes ill on anyone, but people that dump their dogs like this make me want to wish a million karmas on them.
They will be old and frail one day, I pray that they get a taste of this from their own families so that they understand their actions and may ask for forgiveness before they depart.
Greta came home with Aunty Cindy that day, for a decompression stay before coming to the cabins. For 4 days, she strolled around and relaxed, learning to trust human touch again and finding that her needs would finally be met.
However, sadly, the damage had been done before she came to us.
Her kidneys were beyond repair and the symptoms started to show before she came to the cabin with some horrific diarrhea as she was on her way to the cabins. She went back to Aunty Cindy's with some medication and we put off her joining us for a few more days until she felt better, hoping that this was just stress colitis.
It was not.
Kidney issues often hide in plain sight, masquerading as other things, until they are very bad and this was one such case.
She felt well enough to join her new family a few days afterwards and spent the better part of a week exploring and getting to know the others. Easy going, happy to keep herself to herself as long as she nabbed the biggest bed, this little girl looked for all the world as if she had been with us for an age, until disaster struck again and she stopped eating.
We rushed her to the vets again, where they found that she was in late stage kidney failure, and she spent the weekend on IV fluids in the hospital and it was hoped that she would be home again on Monday for us to continue care at home.
But then on Sunday they discovered a severe heart condition.
And that heart condition meant that she could no longer receive IV fluids in the quantities needed to help her kidneys.
It was a catch 22, give her the fluids to heal the kidneys or stop the fluids to maintain her heart and kill the kidney function. That is not a choice at all, is it?
And so we did the kindest thing possible, we let her go.
She passed gently and quietly, eager to be done with her pain, in the arms of our angel Aunty Cindy.
As she passed, she heard these sweet words in her ear... "We love you. You matter to us, we wish we had found you sooner but just know that you have been loved and that you leave with love. Safe journey, little one."
And now she is whole, running around chasing butterflies like the puppy she is again, with perfect eyesight and limbs that do as they are asked.
Sweet Greta Garbo, thankyou for stopping by, now you must rest in peace.

She's poised, she's fabulous and she's a true Hollywood superstar!
Grace Kelly is today's heartthrob and boy does she look every inch the star on this beautiful photo from volunteer Amanda Leal?
She's wearing a collar because she has a skin infection on her back and the little minx won't leave it alone.
However, that collar doesn't detract from her star power one little bit, does it?
Feast your eyes on her today....I can hear the ooohs and aaaahs all the way from here!

Who wants to meet an absolute cutie this morning?
Wish granted!
Meet Norman Reedus, the 16 year old heart throb that's just joined the Little Dog Cabin.
Norman came from White County where he had been turned in as a stray. The shelter staff were considering euthanasia due to his cataracts and poor mobility.
Weeeeeelllll, let me tell you, this boy may be sight compromised but he sure knows the way to everyone's heart!
Gorgeous, saucy, with eyes that you could fall into, and may I add, a bit of a spring in his step once he was out of the shelter?
Look at his face and tell me he's not the most gorgeous thing you've seen on Facebook in ages!
Our Pet food Pantry angel, Natalie Krone, decided on this name for him. She's a mad 'Walking Dead' fan and wanted to name him Norman Reedus because he's her favorite character!
We love the name Norman, it suits him and it feels a bit 'olde worlde' doesn't it?
Let's give him a huge FAAP welcome please!
This boys feet aren't gonna touch the ground much, everyone keeps picking him and kissing him.
And it looks like he's just fine with that!

Your Sunday sizzler this week is beautiful Beagle Jackie O.
Jackie came to us four years ago aged 11 from Barrow county where they had thought she had a huge tumor on her side. We met her, fell in love with that darn yodel and decided we would take her in to FAAP and just make the best of what time she had left.
Well, further inspection by our vets showed it to be an inguinal hernia so we had it removed and then she was right as rain!
Trouble was, by then, we'd fallen in love with everything about this girl, not just her yodel, so we said 'Ahh, she may be too young for the cabins but let's just keep her!"
She has spent the last couple of years switching between the cabins and being fostered by Aunty Kris down at DD where she gets to her full Beagle on, yodeling around the field at 100 miles an hour.
This year, at 15, she's struggling a bit more with the heat so she's not down at DD chasing bunnies and butterflies in the fields and woods but come the end of the summer, you know where she will be!
We love this girl. She's got fantastically weird human amber eyes and a voice like Celine Dion. We thought you'd like to see a pic of her in repose on this glorious Sunday.
Ain't she something?
Thanks as always to our volunteer Amanda Leal for this lovely picture of her Royal Beagleness!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! WE NEED YOUR HELP! WE NEED YOUR HELP!

No, on this occasion its not your cash or your time, this is a way for you to help us without even lifting a finger!

Our wonderful board member Cliff Jolliff and his wife Elaine are long-time dog rescuers based in Banks County. Over the years they have seen hundreds of dogs dumped on derelict property or little used roads and, because they are passionate advocates of 'be the change you want to see' they have decided to try and deal with the problem right from the source.
They are trying to establish a spay/ neuter/pet vaccination project in Banks County to try and stem the tide of 'throwaway dogs' that cause such a problem in the Banks County Area.
There is no county shelter in Banks County.
There is no Humane Society.
There are no meaningful allocated funds for animal welfare in the county, just $2500 total for a county with a population of 21,000, a lot of whom own dogs.

The good news is that they already have a veterinarian who actually has a mobile spay/neuter clinic.
The bad news is that they cannot find somewhere to safely park it to commence operations.
Do you know anyone in Banks County that has a site that can be used for this? All that's required is a site with parking where they can park the mobile clinic, a 50 amp electrical supply and water.
Alternatively, they are more than willing to take on a small office space and turn it into a surgery suite.
They are not looking for handouts, they understand that they will likely have to pay a small rent, but right now they have not been able to find anything suitable.
If you know anyone who has a small office space or suitable land for this purpose, please contact Cliff Jolliff at 770 309 5240.
Cliff would love to hear from you.
So come on, wrack those brains and lets help get Banks County the Spay Neuter/Pet Vaccination clinic it so badly needs.
Remember, vaccinated and fixed pets in the community means a safer environment for residents, and helps to eradicate the threat of Rabies, so this is something we must all get behind!

(The dog in this picture is Ava, whom we rescued in Banks County back in 2008 after she had had umpteen litters. There are thousands of dogs like her, and born to dogs like her, who never get rescued, never find homes. Spay and neuter clinics solve this problem before it becomes one.)
Help Cliff and Elaine today PLEASE

Meet Kara Dailey!
Kara is one of our care techs but she is also our new on-site pet first aider!
Kara recently completed her advanced pet first aid certificate through the College of Integrated Veterinary Technologies where she learned CPR, how to triage wounds, handle limb breaks and treat acute conditions like heat stroke among a whole host of other things.
The course is several months long and requires extensive study but Kara was determined to undertake it so that she could give the best possible care to our pooches.
Her study was made possible by the Jackie Joliff Educational Grant, which pays for our care givers to pursue further education that benefits our senior dogs.
Kara studied diligently and now has quite the bunch of tools under her belt in case of a crisis.
Please join me in congratulating her... well done Kara!

When Natalie, our pet food pantry angel, needed to get a load of huge pet food bags split into more portable ziplock sizes, she told her mum and dad and they SPRANG into action!
This amazing family spent hours and hours bagging up dog food, cat food and treats so that the folks using our 'Helping Hands, Healing Paws' pet food pantry would have enough. It's back breaking work in cramped conditions but they have an attitude that a life of service is a blessing to all and so they always work away with cheery smiles.
Our next pantry outreach on Saturday 13th June in Commerce is almost upon us and man, do we go through a lot of food at this one! Last year we combined the Pendergrass outreach with Commerce and doubled our offerings at the Commerce location so it really was a mass of food to bag.
Thanks to Natalie and her fantastic parents Brian and Becky for making sure no pets go hungry!
We love this family!
Let's give them a huge thankyou!
