Happy 100th birthday, Ale 8 One! Steve and Sheila from our board worked long hours researching to get just the right wording for the Ale 8 One historical marker on Main Street to remember the beginnings of Wi******er’s favorite soft drink! We all enjoyed celebrating yesterday.

Today in American history, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan vanished over the Pacific while attempting an around‑the‑world flight—a bold bid to push aviation’s limits and map a global route for commercial air travel. Marking 89 years since that final radio call, we remember not just the mystery, but the mission: to prove long-distance flight could be navigated, organized, and—one day—routine.

Earhart was already a record-setter: first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, the first person to solo from Honolulu to Oakland, and a tireless advocate for pilots’ safety and opportunity. Few know that her Lockheed Electra carried a “flying laboratory” of refinements for long-haul routes—but her most crucial link, a trailing radio antenna, is believed to have snapped off during takeoff from Lae, crippling navigation with the Coast Guard cutter Itasca waiting near tiny Howland Island. The massive search that followed—then the largest aerial and naval hunt in U.S. history—pioneered open-ocean search-and-rescue tactics later used in war and peace. Earhart’s legacy endures in every horizon pilots dare to cross.

What a great couple of days! The Clark County Wi******er Heritage Commission was fortunate enough to sponsor and chaperone a guided tour of Frankfort, the capital, the governors mansion, and a special stop at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. A special thanks to retired Colonel Jerry Cecil for a wonderful presentation. Thank you to the teachers, bus drivers, and staff at RDC. The 7th graders were great!!
