The Youth Development Center (YDC) was founded in 1990 by a group of individuals, including business people and community leaders, who deeply cared for the development of adolescents in Wi******er, Frederick and Clarke County. Later, Tom and Sheila Baker donated their home and three acres of land to complete a three building campus site. Smith Building was dedicated on December 3, 1995. The Dave and Kathy Holliday Annex was dedicated in November of 2006. All programming is created to be inclusive, enriching, and exciting for all participants. We pride ourselves in the idea that every child who comes into the facility feels seen, heard, valued, and encouraged to grow.

What a night at the YDC. 🎃

By the time families started arriving, the YDC was buzzing. Decorated trunks lined the parking lot, kids showed off some incredible costumes, and families explored everything happening inside. For a few hours, the whole place was everything we want the YDC to be: full of life, welcoming, and a place where everyone feels they belong.

This night was made possible by the generosity of Shenandoah Elevator, Ryan Meyer of State Farm, and FIT4MOM Wi******er, along with the creativity of our trunk hosts, the help of our volunteers, and every family who chose to spend part of their evening with us.

We are so grateful.

Here are just a few of our favorite costumes from the night. 👻🍬 We have plenty more photos (and a fun video!) to share soon, but for now, thank you for helping us fill Loudoun Street with laughter, connection, and a whole lot of Halloween spirit.

TRUNK OR TREAT ON LOUDOUN STREET IS TONIGHT! 🎃👻🍬

Registration is officially CLOSED, and we are getting ready to welcome a very full crowd to the YDC this evening.

A few reminders before you head downtown:

🎃 Trunk or Treat runs from 5:30–7:30 PM

👻 Family entrance is from the South Loudoun Street side of the YDC

🚗 There is no onsite parking for attendees, so please plan to use available street parking nearby

🧙 Witch Walk begins at 4:00 PM and will have its own registration/check-in area

🎮 Our esports room will be open during the evening, so stop in, meet Coach Chris, play a few games, and learn more about esports at the YDC

🧥 It is looking like a chilly evening, so bundle up!

A night this size does not happen without a lot of people choosing to show up.

The 2026 Holistic Living Witch Walk is a reminder of what can happen when a community decides to turn a good idea into something that gives back.

Esports is a lot more than watching someone else play. 🎮

At its best, it gives young people a place to participate, compete, communicate, and belong.

Team-based games create opportunities to practice leadership and problem-solving, while school and community esports programs can open doors for students who may not always see themselves in traditional sports. And because gaming communities stay connected long after the match ends, the relationships built around esports can extend well beyond the screen.

That’s part of what we’re building through esports at the YDC: a place to play, learn, connect, and be part of something.

Some stories are best told after dark. 📖

On October 22, join the YDC and the Peter Bullough Foundation for Scary Stories After Hours, an evening of haunted readings deep in the cellar at 302 S. Loudoun Street.

We’ll be pulling sinister selections from PBF’s rare book collection, brought to life by special guests from our community and Shenandoah Conservatory.

Set against the eerie backdrop of the cellar, the evening will pair supernatural storytelling with light seasonal refreshments in a setting that already brings plenty of atmosphere on its own. 🕯️

Proceeds from the evening support the Youth Development Center and Peter Bullough Foundation.

One week until the costumes come out, the trunks get spooky, and 302 S. Loudoun Street fills with a little Halloween magic. 🎃👻

Next Saturday, October 17, join us for Trunk or Treat on Loudoun Street with decorated trunks, candy, music, games, costumes, and plenty of family-friendly fun.

The event is completely free, but advance registration is required.

Grab your costume, bring the family, and join us from 5:30–7:30 PM for one of our favorite nights of fall.
