SPRING 2027 OPEN CALL - RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED!

Located in historic downtown Wi******er, Virginia, the Peter Bullough Foundation offers intimate, focused residencies to artists and writers, including those elevating voices and topics relevant to the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

In addition to free housing with a private bedroom and private studio space, residents are provided with a $600 monthly stipend toward food, supplies, and living expenses. Each awarded residency period is roughly 4 weeks long and is shared with 2 other artists-in-residence. Apply today for an opportunity to focus solely on your work without the distractions of everyday life! Find your sparkle within a nurturing community of co-residents, enthusiastic staff, and local supporters of the arts.

The PBF accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: visual arts, architecture, literature, music/composition, interdisciplinary arts, playwriting, screenwriting, film/video arts, poetry, and theatre. Ideal applicants will be self-directed, motivated, able to work independently, and interested in engaging with the local community and fellow residents. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Do you love comics and dream of making your own someday? This workshop is for you! NYT bestselling graphic novelist Robin Ha will help bring your ideas to life and guide you in starting your very own comic book. From brainstorming your story and developing your characters to page layouts, youโ€™ll get a comprehensive lesson on the creative process of making comics. This workshop is meant for all ages, no experience is required! All necessary materials and light refreshments will be provided.

About Robin Ha
Robin Ha (she/her) is the award-winning author/illustrator of the graphic novel memoir Almost American Girl. Raised in Seoul, South Korea, she spent her childhood reading and drawing comics. At fourteen, she moved to the United States, where she later studied illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her comics and illustrations have appeared in various publications, including the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, as well as in anthologies highlighting Asian American culture, including Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now, New Frontiers: The Many Worlds of George Takei, and Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology (Secret Identities). She is also the author of the New York Times best-selling comic recipe book Cook Korean!: A Comic Book With Recipes. Her third graphic novel, The Fox Maidens is published by Balzer and Bray in February 2024. Robin is currently working on a graphic novel cookbook, Instant Noodles and Beyond, scheduled to be published in 2026 by Harvest.

Level up the flipbook from your childhood and create your very own stop-motion animation with artist-in-residence Teresa Nicolella .nicolella as she guides participants in using cut paper to create a short film! Participants will need a smart phone with the ability to download a free stop motion animation app in order to capture the animation. All other materials provided!

About the Artist:
Teresa Nicolella is a painter and experimental animator from Seattle, Washington, now based in Baltimore, Maryland. Her work explores surreal world-building that investigates ideas of q***r domesticity and cartoon performance. In 2022 she graduated summa cm laude from the Maryland Institute College of Art with her BFA in Painting and minor in Animation. She currently teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art through the Open Studies Department. She has received awards such as the Winston Art scholarship and was an AXA Art Prize finalist. She has shown her work at the New York Academy of Art and the Parkway Theater in Baltimore, Maryland.

Join us Thursday, April 23 at AREโ€™s R.I.S.E Center for an evening of poems from poets who lived with HIV/AIDS as writer-in-residence Dare Williams leads a conversation on how HIV/AIDS affects us all. What does it mean to archive something or box something up? How do we do this in our own writing and expressions? During the workshop you will be encouraged to engage with your own personal "archive" and express what you discover through poetry. Writers of all experience levels welcome!

About the Artist:
Dare Williams is a Q***r HIV-positive poet, facilitator and literary worker rooted in Southern California. He has received support/fellowships for his work from Brooklyn Poets, Breadloaf, Tin House, and Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded a California Arts Council Performance Grant, and a Peter Taylor Teaching Fellowship from The Kenyon Writers Workshop. His work has been featured in Kenyon Review, Foglifter, Poetry Northwest, and elsewhere. He is an associate poetry editor at Hooligan Magazine and received his MFA from the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College.

About the Artist:
Arista Wilson is an interdisciplinary artist with roots in Virginia, currently planted in Philadelphia. Forever fond of working plein-air, Arista paints quickly on paper and porcelain to capture fleeting sensations from sweet observations. Their work explores landscapes and glimpses of foliage and constantly questions how the feeling of a place can be built out of pattern, color, and line. They received their Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2023, and have completed residencies at the Fish Factory Creative Centre of Stรถรฐvarfjรถrรฐur, Iceland and Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Maine.

Teresa Nicolella .nicolella is a painter and experimental animator from Seattle, Washington, now based in Baltimore, Maryland. Her work explores surreal world-building that investigates ideas of q***r domesticity and cartoon performance.

We are excited to welcome Teresa to the Peter Bullough Foundation and look forward to her workshop "Anyone Can Animate! An Intro to Stop-Motion & Hand-Drawn Animation" on April 28th.

In 2022 Teresa graduated summa cm laude from the Maryland Institute College of Art with her BFA in Painting and minor in Animation. She currently teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art through the Open Studies Department. She has received awards such as the Winston Art scholarship and was an AXA Art Prize finalist. She has shown her work at the New York Academy of Art and the Parkway Theater in Baltimore, Maryland.
