156 years ago on June 19, 1865, Union army troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, bringing the news that the 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were free. Juneteenth commemorates this emancipation and exemplifies empowerment and hopefulness.
Celebrating emancipation, we’re sharing quotes from Frederick Douglass’s 1862 speech, “Black man’s future in the Southern States”, given in Wi******er, MA at Lyceum Hall, a former lecture hall across from present-day BookEnds.
To learn more about Juneteenth and reparations, join teach-in TODAY at 5:00PM at the Griffin Museum co-sponsored by the Network for Social Justice . RSVP in the bio!
