I’m not saying the fate of my species rests on your shoulders, but I’m also not not saying that. Help keep critically endangered African penguins from becoming the world’s saddest plot twist.

Every African penguin that swims back into the ocean carries with it the labor of dozens of people: veterinarians, volunteers, researchers, donors, and the accumulated knowledge of decades of conservation science. It is painstaking, expensive, and emotionally demanding work.

Rehab teams jump into action with medical exams, oil cleaning, nutrition support, and swimming practice.

When a bird finally passes its “pool test” and waddles back into the ocean? It’s a moment of pure hope and joy.

Our newest blog takes you behind the scenes of this life-saving work — the victories, the challenges, and the science that makes each comeback possible.

A beautiful tribute from our partner. Happy 100th birthday Sir David Attenborough!

John Oliver. Yes, you, the human with the excellent glasses and the even better ability to yell truth into the misinformation maelstrom.

I extend my deepest, most flipper‑forward gratitude for your recent public service announcement correcting the outrageous AI‑generated claim that penguins… urinate.

We do not. We have never. We are birds, not tiny tuxedoed garden hoses.

We have some news we're excited to share.

We recently funded a full surveillance camera upgrade on Dyer Island, off the southern coast of South Africa. The island is one of the last places on Earth where African Penguins still breed, and it's under constant threat from poaching and other illegal activities.

The new system gives the conservation team there two solar-powered cameras running day and night, with live footage streamed directly to the mainland. Their CEO can now watch over nesting areas around the clock and respond the moment anything looks wrong.

We just received a detailed report back from the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary - APSS team, and it's a genuinely moving read. The dedication of the people protecting this island is something else.

We wrote the whole thing up in a blog post. It's worth five minutes of your time, especially if you care about what's happening to our ocean wildlife.

This!

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, mandates the protection of wildlife through Section 24, which guarantees the right to an environment that is not harmful to health or well-being and obliges the state to protect the environment for present and future generations through reasonable legislative measures.
Why is the government not protecting the critically endangered African penguins?

When the tallest, cold‑hardiest penguins on Earth are struggling to survive, it’s not a niche problem; it’s a climate alarm with feathers.

This is not just about penguins. This is about oceans, climate, food webs, and the future of every creature that depends on our planet not overheating.

The penguins need us.
The ocean needs us.

World Penguin Day used to feel like a celebration.

In October 2024, the IUCN officially uplisted the African penguin from Endangered to Critically Endangered. We're down to fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs on the planet. In the mid-1950s, there were 141,000. We've lost 94% of Africa's only penguin species over seven decades.

We co-founded KruShan Foundation, a nonprofit built entirely around African penguin conservation. This day, the one where everyone posts adorable photos of these little guys in their tuxedos, feels different when you know what the numbers actually look like.

We worked with these birds last year at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai, South Africa. We thought about that 94% while feeding them.

The African penguin, noisy and smelly, braying like a donkey and absolutely full of personality, is worth every bit of the fight to save them from extinction.

The current trajectory puts extinction in the wild at around 2035. That's what is about.

If you’d like to help us help them, we built a free 5-day email course covering every major threat to this species: overfishing, oil spills, climate change, government inaction, and noise pollution. No guilt trip. Just the real story. And small actions you can take, no matter where you live in the world.

The free email course is our gift to you and the penguins.

The link is in the comments. Happy World Penguin Day. May our beloved birds see many more.
