We just found out Hour, the young lady the Pepper Project is sponsoring, won the Kep Province Spelling Bee. The prize: a semester's worth of tuition at her high school. She is an amazing young woman. Cambodia needs more like her.

What does this tell you about our health care system? After being bitten by a dog in Cambodia, I got the first shot and four more doses of the vaccine in Cambodia (which I brought back to the US). The cost: $102. According to the CDC, the series of 5 shots in the US will run about $3,000.

Our good friend Sob Misy had the students in line at Chamkar Bei -- both literally and figuratively. Misy is our organizer and he outdid himself this year. The Pepper Project supports 21 students at the village as well as students at the nearby Kep International School and in the city of Kampot.

The bikes we gave the Chamkar Bei students this year were great -- lights, locks, baskets, the whole nine yards. Each refurbished bike is $50. The bikes often become the family transportation in addition to getting the student to and from school.

Life can be tough in Cambodia. Peky, one of the students we support in the village of Chamkar Bei, was hit by a motorbike. He was a pedestrian. He's all banged up, including a broken collarbone (which was not reset properly). Despite the pain, Peky is always smiling.
