Patriotism should never be mistaken for politics.
Patriotism is not about party affiliation.
Nor about religion. And it is not about agreeing on every issue.
Patriotism is a value.
It is rooted in:
🇺🇸 Respect
🇺🇸 Honor
🇺🇸 Integrity
🇺🇸 Responsibility
🇺🇸 Courage
🇺🇸 Service
🇺🇸 Gratitude
🇺🇸 Sacrifice
🇺🇸 Compassion
🇺🇸 Unity
🇺🇸 Freedom
These are the values that strengthen families, communities, and our nation.
For generations, programs like VFW Patriot’s Pen, Voice of Democracy, VFW Auxiliary Patriotic Art, and Illustrating America have given students the opportunity to reflect on these ideals through writing and art.
Together, these youth scholarship and contest programs award millions of dollars and encourage students to think deeply about what it means to love and serve their country. Not a particular party.
Yet participation in these programs is declining in many communities. We see this in our own community with the decrease of participation in our scholarship programs.
That should concern all of us.
When fewer young people are encouraged to think about freedom, democracy, and service, we risk losing the values that unite us as Americans.
Patriotism is not divisive.
It is not outdated.
It is not political.
It is a shared commitment to respect those who came before us, to care for one another, and to leave our country better than we found it.
If we want to strengthen our nation, we must invest in our youth and teach them that patriotism is not a slogan.
It is a way of living. We all have a role to play.
Parents, teachers, veterans, and community leaders can help inspire the next generation to understand and appreciate the freedoms we enjoy.
Encourage a student to enter Patriot’s Pen, Voice of Democracy, Patriotic Art, or Illustrating America.
When we teach our children the values of respect, honor, integrity, service, and gratitude, we are preserving the spirit of America for generations to come.
Patriotism is not political.
Patriotism is a value.
And it is worth passing on.
