Why do kids love farm chores?

Because their work matters.

The children at Wild Rose Farm feed the chickens, collect the eggs, carry the water, tend the gardens—and see the difference their hands can make.

Farm chores give children something every child needs: purpose, responsibility, independence, and the deep satisfaction of real work.

A child who helps bring in the hay isn’t just learning how to move hay.
They are learning perseverance and cooperation.
They are developing strength and coordination.
They are learning to notice what needs to be done.
They are experiencing the rhythm of the seasons.
They are discovering that their contribution matters.
And perhaps most importantly, they are beginning to understand:
“I am part of this place, and I have something valuable to contribute.”

At Wild Rose Farm, mixed-age learning creates a community where children naturally learn from one another. Older children have opportunities to lead, mentor, and practice patience and empathy, while younger children learn through observation, imitation, and connection. Working, playing, and exploring together allows every child to grow in confidence, independence, cooperation, and a sense of belonging.
