We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tom Pietrogallo, the visionary CEO who led The Poverello Center — a longtime grantee partner of The Our Fund Foundation — and who devoted his career to ensuring that people living with HIV and chronic illness in South Florida received nutritious food, essential health services, and dignity. To learn more about The Poverello Center and the life-changing work Tom championed, visit poverello.org.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Pietrogallo.

Tom was more than a leader to The Poverello Center family — he was a compassionate advocate, visionary, mentor, and friend to countless individuals throughout South Florida. Through his dedication and leadership, Tom helped transform The Poverello Center from a traditional AIDS Service Organization into a broader, sustainable community organization focused on dignity, nutrition, wellness, and compassionate care for all.

Under Tom’s leadership, The Poverello Center expanded programs that now serve more than 3,500 families living with chronic and critical illnesses and food insecurity throughout South Florida. He championed healthier grocery options, increased nutritional education opportunities, created youth “Healthy Fuel Packs” to help underserved teens facing weekend food insecurity, and guided the development of mobile and pop-up pantry programs bringing healthy food directly into underserved communities and food deserts.

Tom dedicated his professional life to improving the health and well-being of others. He earned his Master of Social Work from the University of South Florida, obtained his clinical social work licensure in 2001, and later earned his MBA from Florida Atlantic University in 2003. He proudly served as a member of the National Association of Social Workers and represented Ryan White Part A on Broward County’s HIV Integrated Workgroup and System of Care initiatives.

Tom’s impact reached far beyond programs and services. He believed deeply in treating every person with dignity, compassion, and respect. His kindness, calm guidance, and unwavering commitment to the community touched the lives of staff, volunteers, clients, partners, and friends alike.

During this difficult time, we ask our community to keep Tom’s family, loved ones, and the entire Poverello Center family in your thoughts and prayers.

Memorial service information will be shared at a later date as arrangements become available.

His legacy of compassion, service, and hope will continue to guide our mission for many years to come.

What a night. Last night's Deep Dive with Pioneer Winter Collective reminded us why we do this work. We heard about the programs, the people, and the mission behind South Florida's only LGBTQ dance company, and then we got to feel it firsthand through a performance that left us moved. Their performance was a reminder of the power of dance to tell stories that need to be told. We are so grateful to have spent the evening learning about the heart behind their work, from productions like Apollo to programs that bring dance to people across our community.

We'd also want to thank Plays Of Wilton for hosting us in such a wonderful space. This is what showing up for our community looks like. 💛

We're very grateful to have partnered with Equality Florida in recognition of Michael Rajner's tenacity and heart. It was a joy to see so many people, including elected officials from Miami-Dade County, join us on a Monday evening at the Gray Box Theater to celebrate this one victory.

This year, Michael was an absolute hero in the fight to protect access to lifesaving medications for 16,000 Floridians living with HIV. On January 8th, the Florida Department of Health announced drastic and sudden cuts to the program eliminating access for 16,000 people effective March 1st. This cruel and unnecessary move by the department caught the attention of HIV/AIDS advocates throughout the state, including longtime advocate Michael Rajner.

For decades, Michael has worked to educate communities about HIV, end the stigma around it, and champion policies for people living with the virus. Michael is passionate about his work and refused to accept that thousands of people would be denied access to their vital medication.

Determined to find a way to restore this funding, Michael worked with Equality Florida, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and other coalition partners for more than two months in Tallahassee, meeting with lawmakers and testifying during committee hearings. Because of this determination, in an unanimous, bipartisan vote, the Florida House and Senate passed emergency funding to restore access to HIV care. The funding will take effect immediately once signed into law.

This was a huge win, and the key role Michael played in this victory can’t be overstated. He was up against tough opposition in the capital.
