An important message from Mayor Dean Trantalis of Fort Lauderdale (affecting struggling tenants [affecting statewide landlord/tenants] during the COVID-19 Pandemic (providing reference to a legal aid resource) for those whom may be facing eviction (due to non-payment of rent). Mayor Trantalis posted:
βWith Governor DeSantis not extending Executive Order 20-211, landlords can resume to file eviction complaints, get a trial date, request the Courts to enter a Final Judgment against tenants for lack of payment of rent, and execute the Writ of Possession against tenants.
As of October 1, 2020, the only protection available to tenants who have been affected by COVID-19 is to complete and provide the landlord with a CDC Declaration Form, and request the Landlord or the Court to stay the eviction until December 31, 2020.
Legal Aid Service of Broward County has received a grant from Broward County, utilizing CARES Act funds, to support providing legal services to Broward County residents who are facing pandemic-related legal issues. The key focus of the grant is housing-related, such as impending evictions, but will also include consumer, veteran, special education, and tax matters.
Services under this grant became available on September 1, and are expected to run through November 30, 2020. The public is encouraged to call Legal Aid to determine their eligibility to receive assistance at 954-736-2497.
