At TCTC, Standards Run Deep
Karey's volunteer story with Camica and Averi:
There’s no cutting corners in the equine world, especially not at TCTC. Structure, responsibility, and respect are non-negotiable. The young volunteers who come here quickly learn that halfway efforts don’t cut it. Not only could someone get hurt, but so could the horse. There's no room for coddling. What they learn is independence, smart decision-making, and how to carry themselves with quiet confidence.
For me, volunteering is only partly about the horses. My heart is in growing capable, resilient young women. I’ll happily shovel a mountain of manure if it means supporting that transformation.
Though I don’t ride, I see the barn through a different lens; one shaped by quiet observation and deep appreciation.
And speaking of deep affection: my favorite resident is Hank, our miniature donkey. He’s small but mighty, and he’s absolutely stolen my heart.
My journey with the barn began with my daughter 18 years ago. Like many kids, she once begged for a horse, something we simply couldn’t provide. But at TCTC, I watched her light up, blossom, and grow through working with the horses. The once tormented middle schooler became a confident, grounded young woman. Camica thrived.
It only felt natural that when my son's daughter was ready, I brought her here, too. The barn continues to be a place of growth, grit, and grace for every young life it touches.
