Mr. Carlos Burks continues to support Frederick Douglass through a mini grant in memory of his mom, Gloria Burks. Mrs. Burks taught at the school for years before her retirement. This year the mini grant will benefit Mrs. Tammy Autry’s class and help purchase hands-on STEM activities! Thank you!

Our Learners to Leaders – Smithfield Foods Program kicked off the 2026–2027 year with an amazing cohort of students! Students participated in a personal protective equipment (PPE) exercise, learning about the critical role safety plays in the plant and how it directly impacts the food production process. They also teamed up with a plant leader for the “Making the Bacon” activity, exploring the many steps and details involved in preparing bacon to leave the plant. To round out the experience, students stepped into the role of HR Specialists and reviewed sample employee applications. The day was filled with hands-on learning, meaningful connections, and exciting opportunities to explore different career paths. We’re so proud of this incredible group and can’t wait to see everyone again for our spring visit! Smithfield Foods Wilson County Schools NC Ralph L. Fike High SchoolJames B.
