After ten years of service at JHTR, Buckwheat has officially retired. 🤍

Since joining our program in 2016, Buckwheat has been a favorite of participants, volunteers, and instructors alike. He was especially valuable as a confidence-building horse, helping many participants as they worked toward riding independently.

Now, at 22 years old, Buckwheat is headed to the Farney family, where he’ll continue helping their kids grow as riders and build confidence of their own. We are so grateful to the Farneys for welcoming an older horse with maintenance needs into their family and giving Buckwheat a wonderful next chapter.

We’d also like to thank Oatsy von Gontard for sponsoring Buckwheat and helping support his important work over the years, and thank Buckwheat himself for ten incredible years. He was a movie star first, a therapeutic riding horse second, and now a beloved kids’ horse, and we think these photos show him settling into his new life beautifully.

Enjoy retirement, Buckwheat! 😍

We’ve got a mouse problem in the barn… and luckily, Ford and Taco were on the case! 🧀🐭

In our game “Dean’s Pest Control,” somebody has been leaving their cheese out, and the mice have taken over! Ford’s mission was to collect all the cheese and then track down every last mouse to save the barn from infestation.

Like many of our lesson activities, this game works on much more than it appears at first glance; participants are practicing skills like visual scanning, memory, problem-solving, motor planning, balance, and following directions, all while having fun.

We named this game in honor of our friend Dean at Dean’s Pest Control, a family-owned and -operated business that has supported us for years, even donating one of Dean’s signature blue hats for the game!

A special shoutout to instructor for dreaming up this activity. So far, it’s been a hit every time we’ve played it!

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the service members who lost their lives serving our country. ❤️🤍💙

At JHTR, we also recognize that service and sacrifice continue long after deployment ends. Through our Veterans programs, horses help create space for trust, confidence, connection, and healing.

Today, we remember those we’ve lost with gratitude and respect, and thank our supporters for making our programming possible, creating opportunities for local Veterans to have an empowering space to work through through trauma and PTSD.

Lennie is officially cleared to return to work! 🎉

Last season, Lennie underwent surgery to help with some arthritis. We are SO excited to have this sweet guy back in action this season, and perhaps no one is more excited than his buddy Ryan, who has been helping hand walk Lennie over the past couple weeks as he gets back into working shape. 💙

We remain incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make Lennie’s surgery and recovery possible, including and Dr. Kyle Heaton, our amazing vet team at , and Elizabeth Mannen Berges and Jim Berges for generously sponsoring his surgery.

Welcome back, Lennie!

What a fantastic first week of the 2026 season! 🩶🐴

We were so excited to welcome back familiar faces, meet new participants and volunteers, and kick off another season of growth, connection, and community at JHTR.

Turns out our excitement was justified, in part because our volunteers smashed it right out of the park! 🏆

A huge thank you to ALL of our amazing Week 1 volunteers:
Amy Schlinger, Andy Klein, Anne Ladd, Charlie Gulotta, Claire Perrin, Colleen Murray, Diana Nekic, Eileen Prugh, Isabelle Uptain, Jane Kusek, Janet Lewis, Jen Nissenberg, Jill Auerbach, Jim Klir, John Ambler, Jonesy Chauvot, Judy Dragonette, Kathy Bucks, Laura Shervin, Maggie Weissenburger, Matt Matthews, Odie Klein Cruz, Patti Drui, Patty Chapman, and Tina Zacco.

A special shoutout goes to and Robyn Reedy, who are officially the first lesson volunteers of the year to reach “Colt” level in our Volunteer Incentive Program! This means they each contributed 5+ hours of volunteer service during our very first week of the season!

Lastly, we’d like to give a warm welcome to several brand new volunteers already jumping right into the 2026 season:
🤍 Andy Klein
🤍 Diana Nekic
🤍 Isabelle Uptain
🤍 Maggie Weissenburger
🤍 Odie Klein Cruz

We couldn’t do this without all of you. Here’s to an incredible season ahead!

Old traditions back in action! ✨

This past year we brought back the tradition of awarding our Volunteer of the Year with a custom championship buckle, and we can’t think of anyone more deserving to have earned it than Laura.

Now that the buckle has officially entered the chat, the competition for this year is on! Who will wear the 2026 buckle? 👀

Welcome back, Crafty! This big, handsome guy is back at JHTR this year, thanks to his owner, , who is graciously lending him to our program for a second year in a row. 🙏

We are so grateful for community members like Maura, whose generosity allows this program to thrive, grow, and continue supporting as many participants as possible. 🩶

Crafty is as kind as he his handsome, and he is a very welcome addition to our herd. Stay tuned for content from his first lesson back tomorrow morning with his best bud, Marcus!
