United Way of Wilson County

United Way of Wilson County Our mission is to lift Wilson County households out of poverty and improve the lives of all in our community. Our Mission
It’s a credo. A mission. A goal.

A constant reminder that when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We build the strength of our neighborhoods. We bolster the health of our communities. And we change the lives of those who walk by us everyday. History
In 1959, the United Fund of Wilson County was organized at a meeting in the Cherry Hotel. The goal for this initial fundraising effort was set at $79,568.3

0. Today the organization we now call United Way raises more than one-million dollars annually to fund human service agencies for the people of Wilson County. Far from being just a once-a-year presence, United Way is an integral part of the community it serves. Each member agency’s program is a part of a total health, welfare, and character building program designed to meet the needs of the community. Because of this fact, United Way has a responsibility to consider the community program as a whole and each agency’s relation to the total program. United Way helps people help themselves and one another by uniting the community’s volunteer fundraising efforts in a manner that builds a strong spirit of community volunteerism; responds to needs that can’t be met through public expenditures; is accountable to the giver and the receiver for dollars and programs; operates in a cost effective manner.

🎓 What began as one Wilson County Schools social worker's simple wish to celebrate her homeless students at graduation grew into something far bigger than anyone could have imagined. 🎓

When word spread about the idea, a group of generous donors immediately stepped forward. They had been searching for a meaningful way to honor a beloved woman who recently lost her battle with cancer. She was someone who spent her life sharing love and light with others. 💫

Additional community partners joined the effort, too. Chick-fil-A Wilson, Alpaca Chicken and Food Lion (Tarboro Street) stepped up to ensure these graduates knew there was a whole community rooting for them and proud of all they had accomplished. 🙌

Each graduate received a gift bag filled with treats, gift cards, encouraging notes and cupcakes. 🛍️🧁

The graduates are part of our United, We Care program, which supports McKinney-Vento students — a federal designation for those experiencing homelessness or housing instability within the schools. We work alongside McKinney-Vento coordinators to help fill gaps when other resources are unavailable.

To our 2026 graduates: Congratulations! 🎉 🎓 We see you. We celebrate you. And we are so proud of your achievement and the resilience it took to overcome obstacles along the way!

To our donors and community partners: Thank you for ensuring a group of students who oftentimes live in the shadows were seen and celebrated Saturday. ❤️

Thanks to the overwhelming support for this project, we will now make this an annual tradition.

United is the Way. 💛

Thank you to Wilson County Department of Social Services, Area L AHEC and Trillium Health Resources for hosting the powerful “Resilience in Motion” conference today! 💙

It was inspiring to hear from leading experts on trauma-informed care, substance use disorders, recovery, resiliency, compassion fatigue and the importance of mindfulness in self-care.
