๐ธ Today weโre featuring some Native Plant favorites- New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) and Aster โWoodโs Pinkโ (Sympyhtotrichum 'Wood's Pink')!
๐ Height: 3-6 feet (New England Aster), 1-1.5 feet (Aster โWoodโs Pinkโ)
โ๏ธ Light: Full sun
๐ฑ Soil: Medium
๐ฆ Wildlife value: Late nectar sources for butterflies and bees!
๐ฟ History/Lore: โAsterโ comes from the Ancient Greek word astฤr, which means "star," due to the star-like shape of the flower head. Greek folklore says that the star goddess Asteria cried when she looked down at the earth and saw no stars. Where her teardrops fell, asters sprouted, bringing star-shapes to the soil. They also represent patience, wisdom, and love, and are the traditional birth flower of September.
๐ Fun facts: New England Aster is propagated from TWC seed and Aster โWoodโs Pinkโ makes a wonderful container plant.
