Check out the latest issue of Wilmington Magazine -- in their "Sacred Spaces" section is a story and artwork by our very own Kathleen McLeod. It is a whimsical story told from the perspective of a partially used tube of Alizarin Crimson paint that finds a second chance at Cape Fear ArtXchange. Through its journey from forgotten art supply to creative reuse treasure, the story shows how donated materials can reduce waste, make creativity more affordable, and inspire artists, teachers, families, and makers throughout the community.

It's Back-to-School Time! And that means TEACHER GRANTS are back at Cape Fear ArtXchange.

We believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn through creativity—and every teacher deserves access to affordable classroom resources.

That's why we're excited to offer our Teacher Supply Grant Program, designed to help educators stretch their classroom budgets and bring more hands-on learning opportunities to their students. Selected teachers receive a $50 Cape Fear ArtXchange shopping grant to purchase creative reuse materials for their classrooms.

And because our donated materials are affordably priced, $50 can go a LONG way at Cape Fear ArtXchange!

Teachers, apply today at https://www.capefearartxchange.org/teachergrant

Important Donation Center Update!

We have encountered an unexpected plumbing issue at our Community Art Space & Donation Center. A damaged sewer pipe beneath the building requires repair, which means portions of the floor will need to be removed over the next couple of weeks.

As a result, we must temporarily suspend all donations at the Donation Center for at least two weeks while repairs are underway.

At this time, we ask that you please hold any donations until we announce that we are ready to receive them again. This pause will help us focus on completing the repairs safely and getting the space back up and running as quickly as possible.

We know this may be inconvenient, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding. The incredible generosity of our community is what makes Cape Fear ArtXchange possible, and we look forward to welcoming your donations again soon.

We will share updates as the project progresses.

Thank you for your continued support!

Updated Donation Procedures

To help us handle donations safely and efficiently, we’ve updated our donation policies.

Our Creative Reuse Store at 4410 Wrightsville Ave. can only accept one bag or box per person during regular business hours.

If you have a larger donation, please bring it directly to our Community Art Space & Donation Center during open hours.

Before You Donate

Please help us make the donation process smooth by:

- Sorting your donations before arriving
- Ensuring items are clean and free of smoke, mildew, mothballs, and pet hair
- Removing any personal or identifying information from donated materials
- Not leaving donations outside when we are closed
- Donating only items you are ready to part with permanently, as donated items cannot be returned

We are unable to accept:

- Broken, dirty, or damaged items
- Toxic or hazardous materials
- Most clothing (except denim jeans)
- Appliances (except hair dryers)
- Computers and TVs
- Bedding and linens
- Toiletries and beauty products
- Packing materials such as Styrofoam and packing peanuts
- Auto parts and building materials not suitable for creative reuse

Why These Changes Matter

Every donation that comes through our doors helps keep usable materials out of landfills and puts affordable creative supplies into the hands of artists, teachers, students, makers, nonprofits, and families throughout our community.

The new Donation Center gives us room to process donations more effectively, organize materials, and support the continued growth of Cape Fear ArtXchange. Separating donation processing from the retail store creates a better shopping experience while allowing us to rescue and redistribute even more creative materials.

While the Community Art Space is not fully up and running just yet, we’re excited about what’s ahead. Look for announcements soon about classes, workshops, volunteer opportunities, and open studio hours.

Every donated item has the potential for a second life—and every purchase helps support a more creative and sustainable community.

Thank you for supporting creative reuse and helping us turn yesterday’s surplus into tomorrow’s inspiration. We couldn’t do it without you.

See you at the ArtXchange!
