The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) celebrates the success of three of its job seekers who recently completed 10 weeks of intensive digital skills training.
Gennetta Corbett, Jacqueline Jacobs, and Shinita Taylor graduated March 26 with multiple professional certifications through SCSEP’s Digital Certification Program (DCP).
The DCP provides trainees with a laptop computer, pre-paid internet access, and a personal coach to guide them through training in various digital skills, including Windows 11, Microsoft Office applications, the internet, Google applications, information literacy, and social media. Those who complete the program get to keep the laptop and are offered additional skills and career learning through the online platform Coursera.
Ms. Corbett joined SCSEP in May 2024 and is assigned to Pender Christian Services in Burgaw. Ms. Jacobs enrolled in October 2023 and is a trainee with the Columbus County Department of Aging in Bolton. Ms. Taylor joined in January 2025 and serves as an administrative assistant with Habitat for Humanity in Wilmington.
United Way of the Cape Fear Area sponsors the SCSEP for low-income residents 55 and older in Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Onslow, and Pender counties by providing job training through paid community service work at local non-profit and government organizations.
Funding originates with the U.S. Department of Labor and is distributed through a grant from the non-profit CWI Works, Inc., of Silver Spring, MD.
