Each year, generous knitters and volunteers create handmade hats and scarves for seafarers spending the holidays far from home.
These gifts offer warmth during the winter months, but they also carry something even more important—kindness.
A simple handmade item can become a reminder that people in Delaware are thinking about those working at sea, and we are grateful for all of our knitters that make this happen year after year.

For the next several weeks, we’re taking you behind the scenes of one of the Seamen’s Center of Wilmington’s most meaningful holiday traditions.
Every December, we work to bring Christmas cheer, comfort, and a little reminder of home to the seafarers visiting the Port of Wilmington—many of whom will spend the holidays thousands of miles away from their families and loved ones.
Through this series, we’ll share the stories behind the boxes, the people who make them possible, what goes inside them, and how you can help us spread a little holiday cheer across the seas. ❤️

Life at sea can be challenging. Long months away from family, isolation, demanding work, and the pressures of life onboard can take a toll on a seafarer’s mental wellbeing.
This World Mental Health Day, we want every seafarer to know: You are not alone. It’s okay to not be okay, and asking for help is a sign of strength. 💙

🚛 One large cargo ship can carry the equivalent of thousands of truckloads of goods!

Ships move enormous amounts of cargo in one journey—from food and clothing to machinery, fuel, and everyday products.

🌎 That means fewer individual trips are needed to move the same amount of goods across long distances.

🧭 Ships use “port” and “starboard” instead of left and right!

Why? Because left and right can get confusing depending on which direction someone is facing. Port and starboard always refer to the same sides of the vessel.

🔴 Port = left 🟢 Starboard = right

Now you know your nautical directions! ⚓

⚓ Ships take on water to stay stable!

Large vessels use special tanks called ballast tanks. Water is added or removed to help balance the ship, keep it stable, and adjust how deeply it sits in the water.

🌊 It may look like “extra water,” but it helps keep the ship—and everyone aboard—safe.

This month, the Seamen’s Center of Wilmington stands in support of everyone affected by breast cancer—survivors, fighters, families, friends, and loved ones.

🌍 Ships can cross multiple time zones in a single voyage!

A vessel traveling across the ocean may pass through several time zones—sometimes making the crew’s clocks, calendars, and sleep schedules feel like they’re constantly changing.

⏰🌊 The ocean has its own version of jet lag!
