Brandywine AAZK

Brandywine AAZK The Brandywine Zoo Chapter of AAZK is a non-profit organization made up of Brandywine Zoo's keepers, educators, support staff, and volunteers.

Our goal is to expand conservation efforts through partnering with the American Association of Zoo Keepers. The Brandywine AAZK Chapter (BAAZK) is made up of zoo keepers, educators, and other zoo employees. We are committed to supporting the professional and conservation efforts of AAZK. By supporting BAAZK, you help enhance, the professional development of its members, and you also help our chapt

er through fundraising efforts, to contribute to conservation both locally and globally. Some fund raising events we have hosted include, ‘Bowling For Rhinos’, which raises money for rhino conservation. Another annual fund raising event we have hosted is 'Tango For Tamarins’. Monies raised at this event help the Golden Lion Tamarins in Brazil and here at the Zoo. We also raise money to help with professional development for the keepers. We host free 'Guest Speaker' events to help educate the public and other zoo professionals on a variety of topics. Past guest speakers have included Dr. Erica Miller, Dr.La’Toya Latney and Hillary Taylor, Delaware’s wildlife rehabilitator. Next time you are at The Brandywine Zoo, stop a keeper and chat with us. We love to talk about our jobs, the animals in our care, our AAZK Chapter and what our chapter does, and even what it takes to become a zoo keeper

Being a zoo keeper means being passionate, dedicated, hardworking, and having a love of animals and people. Zoo keepers are care givers, educators, conservationists, trainers, and a lot more. Everything we do during our work day directly affects the animals in our care. Our days include feeding the animals, cleaning enclosures, making sure all the animals are healthy and happy, both physically and mentally. We do “positive reinforcement” training and we also do behavioral enrichment for the animals. The training we do helps us better care for the animals and the enrichment keeps the animals stimulated and hopefully solicits some of their natural behaviors. Our days are also made up of problem solving, brainstorming, and progressive learning. Zoo keepers give 100% of themselves to their jobs and the animals in their care. We are constantly bettering ourselves through conferences, networking, newsletters and schooling to helps us grow and stay up on the best animal care practices. We are professionals dedicating our careers to gaining knowledge and experience, sharing this knowledge to constantly improve the care of the animals here at The Brandywine Zoo.

Happy 🐱 from the many versions of Blue!
People often think that our caracal, Blue, is “mean” because she hisses a lot. But caracals are known to be vocal and hissing is just one way that Blue communicates.
Just like us, Blue can have good days and bad. She’s curious, smart, athletic, goofy, brave, and so much more!

Happy international cat day, Blue!

Happy 8th hatch day, Indy!
Our Texas Indigo snake, Indiana Jones (aka Indy), got his name both as a reference to his species as well as a nod to the iconic adventurer that was averse to snakes.
Indiana Jones (the human) may not have been a big fan of them, but we think snakes are pretty neat! 🐍

Happy intern appreciation day!
This is a day to recognize the hard work and contributions that interns bring to a job. Internships are a great way for young people starting out to learn and develop skills for their future careers, but it’s also a great opportunity for a workforce to bring in fresh perspectives to their facility.
So thank you, interns, for being a part of our team!

We wanted to give one last shout out to all of the incredible keepers here at the Brandywine Zoo . Without their hard work and dedication to the animals, as well as the team, we wouldn’t be able to get the job done!
This is a physically and mentally demanding job and no one joins this field in hopes of making the big bucks. We do it because we love the work and know that no matter how small the task might seem we are making a difference in the lives of these animals!
So thank you, to all of the animal care staff across all of the zoos and aquariums making a difference for conservation and fighting for the best quality care these animals deserve to receive. We recognize your efforts and appreciate all that you give for this job! 🫶

Last, but not least, we have Sam! Sam is our horticulture intern for the summer. Although her primary job is helping to maintain the grounds and tend to the gardens, she is always willing to help the keepers with odd tasks around the zoo such as keeper talks, dishes, and various other projects.
For offering a helping hand across departments, Sam received the Considerate Condor award!

Thank you, Sam, for being an unofficial keeper and for keeping the grounds in order!🌻

Trista is working at the zoo for the summer as our keeper intern. There is a lot to cover in such a short time and we want Trista to get the most she can out of this internship which sometimes means her schedule can be a little hectic. Trista often has to hop (😉) around from task to task and no two days are ever the same for her. Her ability to learn quickly, go with the flow, and adjust to whatever is asked of her is why she received the Flexible Frog award!

Thank you Trista, you have been a huge help this summer and we hope to see you continue to grow in this field! 🐸

Alex has been at the zoo for a little over 2.5 years. He is great at getting projects done and often finishes them before you even ask him to start it! He is willing to do the hard tasks that no one else wants to do, and never complains about it. For always being ready to jump into a project, and making it look easy, Alex received the Efficient Eagle award!

Alex, we appreciate all of the hard work that you do. Thanks! 🦅

Eliza has been working at the zoo for about 3.5 years. She has a unique way of looking at things and isn’t afraid to think outside the box or bring her (sometimes wild) ideas to the table. Be it big or small whenever there is a problem, Eliza is almost sure to have a suggestion that no one else has thought of and often times it works! For sharing thoughtful ideas and going out on a limb to find solutions to difficult problems Eliza is our Courageous Crane!

Thank you, Eliza. We appreciate getting to see things from your point of view and learning new ways to do things! 💖

Alyssa joined the zoo team this spring. From day one they have had a cheery smile on their face. Alyssa is often the first person to say “good morning!” or ask you “How’s it going?!”. They are a very kind and thoughtful coworker and we are lucky to have their bubbly presence.
Alyssa received the Darling Duck award for always having a friendly and pleasant attitude and greeting each day (and person) with a smile!

Alyssa, we appreciate your efforts and ability to smile through it all. Thank you! 🦆
