Please join New Hanover County Fire Rescue in congratulating Captain Ben Bobzien on his well-deserved promotion to Battalion Chief, effective September 30, 2025.

Captain Bobzien has been a dedicated member of New Hanover County since May 2001. He was promoted to Company Officer in September 2007 and later to Zone 2 Captain in September 2018.

Among many accolades, 2024, Captain Bobzien served as a Task Force Leader, coordinating the response efforts in Western North Carolina for Hurricane Helene. His leadership was crucial in managing the deployment of resources and ensuring the safety of both the responders and the affected communities. Captain Bobzien' s efforts were recognized for their effectiveness and efficiency, earning him commendations for his outstanding service.

New Hanover County Fire Rescue is proud to announce the promotion of Michael Stophel to Deputy Fire Chief.

Chief Stophel has been a dedicated member of New Hanover County Fire Rescue for more than 25 years, including 18 years of service as a Battalion Chief. Since 2018, he has also served as the Volunteer Fire Chief for Rocky Point, further demonstrating his commitment to the fire service and his community.

As a Certified Fire Officer IV, Chief Stophel brings a wealth of experience in operations, interagency coordination, and organizational development. His leadership style is built on collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and a passion for mentoring others.

As Deputy Chief, Chief Stophel will help guide the department’s strategic planning, emergency operations, and organizational growth, continuing his steadfast dedication to serving the citizens of New Hanover County.
