The Black River in southeast North Carolina is home to the oldest group of trees east of the Rocky Mountains. Trees in the Three Sisters Swamp area range in age from 700 - 1600 years old.

House Bill 353 authorizes the creation of the Black River State Park and a trio of state natural areas.
