Officials believe the current spike was driven in part by family gatherings around Thanksgiving and Christmas that allowed younger people, who were more likely to be out and about, to spread COVID-19 to their elders, who otherwise tended to stay home.

Children who spread coronavirus to their parents and grandparents are apologizing to them on their deathbeds as L.A. County reels.

Ambulances in LA are waiting up to 8 hours to admit new patients at overwhelmed hospitals. The number of COVID-19 patients in ICUs has more than quadrupled since the beginning of November.

"Things are worse than people think."

Dr. Nichole Bosson of the LA County Emergency Medical Services Agency explains Monday's orders not to transport some patients and to limit oxygen use amid Los Angeles' massive COVID-19 surge.
