DELAWARE SNAPSHOT 📸
All That Jazz
Wilmington’s 39th Annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, through August 8 at Rodney Square, is bringing a variety of talent to what’s been called the East Coast’s biggest free music event. Its hometown namesake tragically was killed in a 1956 crash going to a gig at age 25. Honored by a Delaware State Historical Marker, sculptures and a city park, “Brownie” is known as a gifted trumpet player, entertainer and composer. Shown at the festival in 1998 – and seen there for the first time by his only child, Clifford Jr. – the only known film of Brown playing is with drummer Max Roach on The Soupy Sales Show in 1955. You can find that 3-minute film on YouTube.
