Bold color. Distinctive perspective. Unforgettable landscapes ๐Ÿž๏ธ๐ŸŒ„

This Pride Month, we're highlighting the work of North Carolina artist Maud Gatewood, whose paintings are featured in The CAM Collection and on this month's Pride Month Tour.

At 16, after skipping two grades, Gatewood enrolled in the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC Greensboro. A Fulbright Scholar who studied in Austria under Oscar Kokoschka, Gatewood traveled extensively throughout her life, drawing inspiration from places around the world. Her landscapes often reflect a deeply personal way of seeing, blending observation with abstraction to create scenes that feel both familiar and dreamlike.

Works like Berenty Towards Sunset (1990), inspired by the spiny forests of southern Madagascar, reveal Gatewood's fascination with place, color, and atmosphere. Often devoid of people, her paintings invite viewers to experience the landscape through her eyes and consider themes of solitude, perspective, and belonging.

Though Gatewood chose not to discuss her sexuality publicly, her long-term same-sex relationships were an open secret. Today, her work remains an important part of North Carolina's artistic legacy and a meaningful inclusion in CAM's Pride Month programming.

CAM is also proud to participate in the Blue Star Museum Program. Actively serving military members and their families may visit participating museums nationwide for free as part of the Blue Star Museums program, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families in collaboration with the Department of War.
