“I’m proud of myself… I used to be so quiet, and I wouldn’t say anything. Now, if I have something to say, respectfully, I am going to say it. If I have a question, I have no problem asking because I don’t know everything. I enjoy making connections with people and talking to new people.”

Cohort 2 scholar Elaine Ansah (https://www.linkedin.com/in/elaine-ansah/) (far right) joined the Delaware College Scholars podcast to discuss her journey, which has taken her from serving as a Legislative Intern in the United States Senate to teaching English in Mombasa, Kenya, as a Fulbright Program English Teaching Assistant.

Elaine’s professional path is marked by her dedication to public service and community impact. She currently serves as a Policy Coordinator for the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence (https://www.linkedin.com/company/delaware-coalition-against-domestic-violence/), leveraging her expertise to advocate for systemic change. “I’m also going to use this time to give my love to DCS; I always have to. This [DCS] has really changed my life, and without this opportunity, I don’t even think I would have ended up at George Washington and be where I am. This was pivotal in my journey, so I always have to give thanks to the program and all that you guys have done for me over the years.”

Mya Burrell is a first-generation college graduate from George Washington University, where she earned her degree from the Elliott School of International Affairs, majoring in International Affairs and Economics with a concentration in Comparative Political, Cultural, and Societal Systems in Africa. A proud Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated member, she currently serves as an AmeriCorps Fellow with Saga Education, continuing her commitment to service and education.

In this episode, Mya discusses how she created opportunities for herself, such as serving as a Legislative Intern for the U.S. House of Representatives and working as a Program Assistant for the Elliott School of Affairs, tutoring high school students and her ability to connect with them as an AmeriCorps Fellow, and her future professional goals that combine education and policy.

We are so proud of you, Mya!

This week, we enjoyed connecting with Cohort 6 scholar Dayana Garzon Lagos!

Dayana, a three-time Dean’s List recipient, has seemingly done it all during her time at the University of Delaware. Over the past three summers, Dayana has worked for Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, where she has demonstrated leadership, creativity, and dedication to the hospitality industry. Her ability to foster uplifting environments and deliver exceptional guest experiences has left a lasting impression, as she will begin working for Hyatt upon graduation in their Corporate Management Training Program.

On campus, Dayana worked as an Events Intern in the fall of 2023 and is a member of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. Most recently, she (along with seven other members) performed an eight-minute routine at the Multicultural Greek Congress Step and Stroll Show, where they placed second! Since September of this year, the hospitality business management major has also worked as a food and beverage intern at Delaware Park Casino.

Keep shining, Dayana!
