June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. For many teenage boys, mental health challenges are real, even when they are not always visible. According to the CDC, more than one in four male high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, nearly one in five report struggles with their mental health, and roughly 13% report thoughts of su***de. These realities remind us that supporting the whole person remains an essential part of Salesianum.

At Salesianum, formation extends beyond the classroom. Through the Hynansky Wellness Center and the daily relationships students build with trusted adults and peer counselors, we strive to create a community where young men are known, supported, and encouraged to grow academically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. Mental health resources are provided in various ways to our students, which is also supported by the SL24: UnLocke the Light Foundation.

This month serves as a reminder that caring for one's mental and emotional well-being is not separate from becoming the man God calls us to be. It is part of the journey.

Claim the Name.
Live Jesus.

"The more people that open up about the problems that they're having, the more people will understand that everybody has those problems. And it's okay to talk to people. You don't have to deal with things alone."

So many times in life, we feel like we are alone and on an island, but a lot of times there are so many other people in your life can relate to the feelings you are having. John Bittman, a recent Conrad graduate, sat down with us and explained how being able to talk about the rough time he was having with his teammates was so important to him and really helped him get through all of the feelings he was having. John's story is a perfect example of how sometimes, we are all more alike then we maybe think, and there is always common ground to be found.
πŸˆπŸ’‘πŸ”“
Thank you, John, for your vulnerability and reminding us of the importance of healing in the light, not in the dark.

"It's hard to recognize you are struggling when you isolate yourself. But I think once you start to bring in community, then you realize that we're all much more alike."

As mental health awareness month nears the end, another lesson we want to highlight is the importance of realizing when you need help. We sat down with Charlee Ahearn, a student at the University of Delaware, who opened up about a time she really struggled with her mental health in high school, but how she didn't think she was struggling "enough" to get help.
πŸ”“πŸ’‘βœ¨
Charlee’s story is a reminder that you do not have to hit a breaking point to deserve support. Asking for help is not weakness, it’s a step toward healing, connection, and realizing you were never meant to carry everything alone.

We are excited to welcome Molly Ontiveros, our new Director of Clinical Support, to the Sean's House and SL24 team!

Molly brings a wealth of experience in counseling, program development, and mental health leadership, most recently serving as Director of Salesian Wellness at Salesianum School and as a therapist with Counseling Associates of Delaware. In her role, Molly will work closely with our Peer24 Support Specialists and our admin team to strengthen our clinical framework, enhance peer support training, and ensure our programs are grounded in best practices.

Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to supporting young people through evidence-based care, crisis management, and innovative wellness programming. We are so grateful to have her expertise, leadership, and passion supporting our mission.

"If you're really feeling down, like somebody is always there, somebody will always listen and understand."
πŸ€πŸ’‘πŸ”“
As mental health awareness month continues, a very important lesson we want to highlight this month is the importance of believing in yourself, but also understanding when it's too much for just you alone to take on. We sat down with Elijah Zielinski, a sophomore basketball player at Conrad, who opened up about losing his love for the game. What once brought him joy started to feel overwhelming, and finding his way back wasn’t easy. Through believing in himself, leaning on support, and reconnecting with why he started, Elijah slowly rediscovered his passion for basketball.
πŸ€πŸ’‘πŸ”“
His story is a reminder that sometimes we lose connection with the things we love most, and that can feel scary. But even in those moments, there is hope that you can find your way back again.

Major Light: Highmark & The Bluecoats!
πŸ’‘πŸ’™πŸ”“
In February, the Delaware Blue Coats partnered with Highmark to host a Mental Health Awareness Game, changing their name to the β€œYellow Jackets” for the night to shine a light on mental health awareness across Delaware. Players wore special yellow jerseys as a reminder to the community that no one has to struggle alone. Following the game, the team signed and auctioned off the jerseys, donating the proceeds to SL24.

Last week, members of both organizations took the time to visit Sean's House and learn more about our mission and the impact the House has on this community. We are so grateful for their partnership and commitment to creating conversations surrounding mental health both on and off the court.

Salesianum nonprofit club survey!
πŸ”“πŸ’‘πŸŽ’
At the beginning of this school year, students in Salesianum School's Nonprofit Club sent out a survey to the student body to better understand how students are engaging with their Wellness Center, especially Sean’s Room. After collecting and analyzing the data, the students presented their findings to our team, providing valuable insight into how we can continue supporting the mental health and well-being of Salesianum students through Sean’s Room.
πŸ”“πŸ’‘πŸŽ’
We are so grateful for students who are willing to lead important conversations and help create positive change within their school community!
