The weeks and months after bringing home a baby can be filled with love, joy, exhaustion, and change—all at the same time.

The transition into parenthood can place stress on even the strongest relationships. Sleep deprivation, new responsibilities, recovery from birth, financial pressures, and shifting routines can affect how families communicate and connect.

Support matters.

When parents have access to practical help, emotional support, rest, and trusted resources, families are better equipped to navigate the challenges of the postpartum period together.

Strong families don’t have to do it alone. 💙

The fourth trimester can be one of the most challenging seasons a family will ever experience.
Recovery after delivery was never meant to happen alone. Yet many parents feel pressure to do it all—while healing physically, adjusting emotionally, caring for a newborn, or navigating an unexpected journey.

This month’s reminder: You were never meant to do this alone.

Support from family, friends, neighbors, healthcare providers, and community resources can make a meaningful difference during the weeks and months after delivery.

Whether it’s accepting a meal, asking someone to hold the baby while you rest, attending a follow-up appointment, or simply sharing how you’re feeling, reaching out for support is a sign of strength—not weakness.

Every parent deserves care during the fourth trimester.

Because when families are supported, healing becomes possible.

“How are dads doing?” is an important health question too.

During Men’s Health Month, we’re recognizing an often overlooked part of maternal and child health: the emotional well-being of fathers and partners.

Many fathers quietly carry stress, anxiety, grief, trauma after difficult pregnancies or births, and the pressure to stay “strong” for everyone else. Experiences like traumatic deliveries, maternal health emergencies, NICU stays, pregnancy loss, and postpartum challenges can deeply affect the entire family — including fathers whose emotional struggles may go unseen.

Checking in on father's matters.
Because supporting fathers supports healthier families. When every parent feels seen, supported, and connected to care, families are stronger and outcomes improve for mothers, babies, and children.

At the Delaware Maternal and Child Death Review Commission, every story reviewed reminds us that maternal and child health impacts entire families.

Men’s mental health matters in maternal and child health.

During Men’s Health Month, we’re recognizing an important truth: pregnancy, birth, postpartum complications, NICU stays, and loss can affect the emotional well-being of fathers and partners, too.
While conversations around maternal and child health often focus on mothers and babies, many fathers quietly carry stress, anxiety, grief, fear, and trauma after difficult pregnancy and birth experiences. Some may experience symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress, especially following emergency deliveries, severe maternal complications, infant illness, NICU admissions, or pregnancy and infant loss.

At the Delaware Maternal and Child Death Review Commission, our reviews continue to show how deeply maternal and infant health outcomes are connected to family support systems, access to care, communication, and emotional well-being.
Behind every case reviewed is an entire family impacted — including fathers and partners whose experiences are often unseen.

Checking in on dads matters.
Supporting fathers supports mothers.
Supporting parents supports children.
Because healthier families begin when everyone feels supported, connected, and seen.

The postpartum period is often described as joyful — but it can also be overwhelming.
New routines, interrupted sleep, financial stress, emotional exhaustion, medical complications, NICU stays, mental health challenges, and changing family dynamics can place significant strain on parents and relationships after birth.
At the Delaware Maternal and Child Death Review Commission, our reviews continue to show how support systems, communication, mental health, and access to care all influence family well-being and outcomes for mothers and babies.
Checking in on families matters.
Because healthy outcomes are supported not only by medical care, but by emotional support, connection, and community during the transition into parenthood.

A father’s well-being affects more than one person.

Mental health support, emotional connection, and involved caregiving don’t just benefit fathers—they help strengthen families.

Research continues to show that engaged fathers and supportive family relationships are associated with healthier outcomes for children and improved well-being for mothers.

At the Delaware Maternal and Child Death Review Commission, we know maternal and child health extends beyond pregnancy and birth. It includes the support systems, relationships, and connections that help families thrive.

Healthy families require support for everyone.

When we talk about maternal and child health, we often focus on mothers and babies. But fathers and partners play an important role in the health and well-being of families, too.

Pregnancy complications, traumatic births, NICU stays, postpartum challenges, and loss can affect fathers emotionally, even when their struggles go unseen. Many carry fear, anxiety, grief, trauma, and the pressure to remain strong for those around them.

At the Delaware Maternal and Child Death Review Commission, our reviews continue to highlight the importance of support systems, mental health, communication, and access to care in helping families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.

Because supporting fathers supports mothers.

Supporting parents supports children.

And healthier families begin when everyone feels seen, supported, and connected.

Access to timely prenatal care can make a difference for mothers and babies.

A recent article from the University of Delaware highlights an important finding identified through reviews conducted by Delaware's Maternal and Child Death Review Commission (MCDRC): many women who experienced a stillbirth or infant death had late or no access to prenatal care.

According to the article, 67% of pregnant women in Kent County and nearly half of pregnant women in Sussex County who experienced a stillbirth or infant death had delayed or no prenatal care. These findings underscore the importance of ensuring families can access care early and throughout pregnancy.

The University of Delaware's new Nurse-Midwife Master's Program is designed to help address maternal healthcare workforce shortages in Delaware by training providers who can serve communities across the state. Dr. Meena Ramakrishnan, consultant and epidemiologist with MCDRC, noted that training more nurse-midwives in Delaware is "an important step toward improving outcomes."
At MCDRC, we review maternal, infant, and child deaths to better understand where prevention opportunities exist and how Delaware can strengthen systems of care for families.
