Wilmington Falcons Wilmington Delaware Peregrine Falcons The current resident falcons are an established female (Red Girl) and a new male.

A nest box was installed on the Brandywine Building (currently called CITI) in Wilmington, DE in 1992 by Craig Koppie of USFWS. Red Girl hatched in Harrisburg, PA in 2008 and has been at this nest site since 2010. A prolific egg layer and a devoted mother, she has fledged over 50 offspring from Wilmington! The male, who has not yet received a name, hatched in 2018 on the Walt Whitman Bridge. He re

placed Trinity, the previous male, late in the 2022 breeding season so he and Red Girl have produced no offspring yet. In 2022, Red Girl and Trinity produced five eggs. The young Wilmington peregrine falcons are seldom in camera view now but at least one is still around. If they spot an adult in the nest box they sometimes fly in screaming and the adults immediately leave. I saw green visit the nest box a few days ago and one with a lighter band visits a lot (probably yellow, but nest box lighting makes band colors hard to discern). This morning pink was spotted on the roof of Brandywine Building. She stayed long enough for me to get a quick screen grab.

A peregrine sporting juvenile plumage was seen in Bombay Hook in the last few days. The band number was partially visible: BA/?? The three Wilmington falcons this year have bands that start with BA but I'm not sure they would be making that trek yet (35 miles). Last year's female (Brandy) wore band BA/83 and would still show juvenile plumage. I'll keep an eye out for updates from Bombay Hook

As promised, here is the rest of the video of the three young peregrines flying yesterday evening. Lots of antenna play. I used to watch Trinity, the previous male, showing this to his kids. It helps them learn to "kite" (hovering motionless in the air) which makes them very hard for prey to spot when they are hunting.

The wind was perfect this evening for young peregrines to practice soaring and kiting, so for some forty minutes they flew together, chasing and playing antenna tag over 1201 Market St. Not easy to follow with remote operated cameras, but here is a quick peek. Forty minutes of video to edit so I'll try to post some more tomorrow.

I haven't seen much of the girls during the July 4th heat wave but today I caught Yellow bringing a freshly caught pigeon into the nest box. I can't say for sure that she caught it herself, but she sure is panting heavily and it is a complete bird (adults generally remove parts of large birds before delivering them tot he kids). It took Yellow some time to semi-pluck it and she fed multiple times.

Saturday was a rainy day in Wilmington. The three young peregrines assembled on the roof of Brandywine Building to preen during a brief dry interval. Of course when I catch them together I try to get some video.

We didn't catch the girls on the roof this weekend. They did spend some time evicting the adults from their old room.

All three fledglings seem to be enjoying the world outside the nest box. This evening (June 17) Stewart left food for them on Brandywine Building. After a bit of competition for the food they provided a good close look. The end of this video gives the clearest shots.

The kids like to oust Stewart from one of his favorite spots on Brandywine Building. That's fine with me - it lets me catch them on camera from time to time. This morning we saw Pink. Here's about three minutes of Green and Yellow on this windy day Closeups of Green at the end.

There is no sound on the roof cameras but I'll bet they are not being silent.

Early this morning Pink made an appearance on the roof camera, no doubt ordering Stewart to get her some breakfast.
