Retired USMC Major James Capers was awarded the Medal of Honor on Thursday for his actions during the Vietnam War. Capers recently served as grand marshal for the Southeast NC Veterans Parade.

The parade’s theme, “Honoring All Who Served,” reflects a commitment to recognizing the service and sacrifice of all veterans. Each year the parade planniing committee goes a step further by giving financial support to organizaations in the community that provide key services to veterans. The 2026 recipients with paraade Chairman Justin Rose are: Save a Vet Now, $15,000, represented by Tony Vivaldi; the Cape Fear Veteran Resilience Project, $2,500, represented by Jim Blair; and Canines for Service, $2,500, represented by Erin and service dog in training Elle.
