We enjoyed a special program in the fall when UNCW Athletics Director Michael Oblinger was our guest. Michael came to UNCW 2 years ago from UCONN. UNCW is now fielding 19 Division 1 teams in the CAA conference. Michael discussed the long range plans for the athletics department including the possibility of a new basketball arena. We were happy to learn that UNCW athletes have given back the community with 5066 hours of community service.

Ruth Smith serves as the Founder, President and Flight Leader for Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area (HFCFA). Founded in 2020, HFCFA is a local, all-volunteer nonprofit organization that supports the mission of the National Honor Flight Network – to transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honoring those who have served and sacrificed for our country. HFCFA flew its first mission to Washington, DC on April 30, 2022 and flew again in April 2023. In September 2022, both Ruth and the Honor Flight organization were awarded NC Coastal Inspiration Awards from AARP North Carolina.

Ruth brings a wealth of experience from the corporate, non-profit, and public sectors to lead the organization. She spent most of her career based out of Washington, DC where she worked
in government, and as a government relations professional. While living there, she was also a volunteer with the Honor Flight “Ground Crew” at Reagan Washington National Airport.

Ann Tumblin, History of Topsail Island

Ann Tumblin spoke about the history of Topsail Island, which included Civil War activity, military training for World War II, the WASPS (Women's Air Force Service Pilots), and Operation Bumblebee. Topsail Island served as a proving ground for some of the first U.S. missile efforts. The principle of the controlled ram jet engine (the main concept for today's supersonic flights) was tested and proven on Topsail Island as a result of Operation Bumblebee.

Ann represented the Historical Society of Topsail Island, a non-profit organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, and promotion of the history of the Greater Topsail Island area under the mission "Preserving the Past, Enjoying the Present, Building the Future." She served on the Board of Directors.

🌊 "We take kids with autism surfing. We paddle out together on tandem boards to catch the waves that come our way. That’s what we do; that’s what we love."

We’re thrilled to announce that the Cape Fear Rotary - Jungle Rapids proudly presented a $2,000 check to the Surfers Healing NC! 🙌

Supporting and giving back to the community is at the heart of what we do, and we’re honored to support this amazing organization as they host a local camp at Wrightsville Beach, NC. 🏄‍♂️🏄‍♀️
