At this morning's meeting, we will welcome Carrie Theall, Executive Director of Carousel Child Advocacy Center (CCAC).

Carrie brings 20+ years of nonprofit leadership experience and a commitment to advancing the safety and well-being of children.

For more than 25 years, CCAC has supported children and families impacted by abuse across Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. Through medical evaluations, trauma-focused therapy, family support and prevention education, the organization helps children begin healing and works to prevent abuse in our community.

We look forward to hearing from Carrie and learning about CCAC.

Last Friday, District 7730 Governor Shawn Braswell visited to share her vision and goals for the District. Additionally, our club was proud to present Shawn a $1,000 check for the Paul Harris Foundation.

It was also an exciting day of growth! Andy Aretakis, who happened to be celebrating 38 years of Cape Fear Rotary membership, inducted two new members.

Tomorrow, we are excited to welcome Shawn Braswell, Rotary District 7730 Governor for 2026-27!

A member of the Southport Rotary Club, Shawn has served Rotary in a number of leadership roles, including as club President, District Public Image Chair and Assistant Governor for Area 4. She is also a Rotary Leadership Institute graduate, a District “Dare to Lead” graduate and a 2022 District Emerging Leader.

We are looking forward to hearing from our District Governor as she continues her service across District 7730.

Last Friday, Cape Fear Rotary welcomed Heather Wilson, MFA, CEO of Cameron Art Museum (CAM).

Heather walked us through the museum’s founding and relocation to Independence Boulevard, along with its current exhibits, programs for all ages, classes and outdoor spaces. She also invited us to try CAM’s café that serves brunch, lunch and dinner, sometimes with live music.

As a cultural gathering place, CAM fosters lifelong learning, creativity and community connection through the arts.

Tomorrow, Cape Fear Rotary will welcome Heather Wilson, MFA, CEO of Cameron Art Museum (CAM).

With roots dating back to 1962, CAM has been part of Wilmington’s cultural community for more than 60 years. What began as a museum focused on North Carolina artists has grown into a cultural gathering place featuring more than 4,400 works of art, rotating exhibitions, arts education and dynamic community programming.

Heather has been part of CAM’s leadership since 2006, serving in several roles before becoming CEO. We’re looking forward to hearing from Heather and learning about her work and the museum’s continued role in our community. 🖼️

During last week’s meeting, Hank Miller, former Chair of Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, spoke to us about the proposed replacement of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. He kindly shared his expertise, answered our questions and addressed rumors about the massive project.

Additionally, Paul Opp, CEO of the People of Peru Project, told us about the organization’s work in Iquitos, including a crisis center, educational program and medical and dental clinic for people in the region. On the 25th anniversary of September 11, we honor those who served and sacrificed, and we continue to support those who serve us today.

This morning, we met at Beau Rivage Golf & Resort to volunteer at the New Hanover County Professional Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament. Funds from the tournament are used to assist local firefighters during hardships and to better our community.

During the last meeting, our very own Anthony “Tones" Harvey introduced us to his manager, Brian Mingia, who is Executive Director of The Healing Place of New Hanover County.

Brian discussed the organization’s long-term residential services for those affected by addiction and homelessness. With 200 beds, The Healing Place implements a social model of recovery that offers individuals the opportunity to practice connection, accountability and self-regulation.
