Ausable Freshwater Center

Ausable Freshwater Center We advance the science and stewardship of Adirondack waters๐Ÿ’ง Weโ€™re a hub โ€“ a center for innovation in freshwater science and stewardship. Regis, and more.

The Ausable Freshwater Center (AFC) is a nonprofit organization that advances science and stewardship of Adirondack waters. Our hallmark science-based stewardship โ€“ restoring streams, protecting native habitat and aquatic species, safeguarding water quality โ€“ unlocks knowledge of how freshwater systems work and applies it to real-world challenges. We share our technical skills to help Adirondack c

ommunities, municipalities, landowners, and residents protect and restore their watersheds efficiently and for the long run. The Ausable Freshwater Centerโ€™s work is Adirondack-wide, but our home and laboratory is the Ausable watershed. Formerly the Ausable River Association, after 25 years of service to the Ausable, weโ€™re ready to serve the communities and waters of the Boquet, Saranac, Upper Hudson, Sacandaga, Raquette, St.

๐Ÿ”†๐ŸŒธWith spring erupting in blossoms all around us, now is a great time to learn about the plants in our area. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค“Join AFC and APPIP for an educational walk at the Boquet River Nature Preserve on Sunday (June 8th) to learn how to identify and manage some of the most common invasive plants *and* how to participate in AFC's newly launched Community Seed Scouting initiative.

Our nursery curator and apprentice will provide a demonstration of the program for folks interested in helping with tracking plant growth and locating potential seed collection sites for the Ausable Conservation Nursery. These are great ways to help our nursery thrive and to support our riverbank restoration efforts. ๐ŸŽ‰ Register for this free event here (link in bio): https://adkinvasives.com/event/boquet-river-nature-preserve-invasive-species-training-2026/

What a treat it has been to watch the watershed wake up this year with all the teens in our Teen Aquatic Stewardship program! Working with our partners at Adirondack Mountain Club, we covered important topics including water chemistry, hydrology, riverbank restoration, aquatic organisms, leave no trace, and more. Thanks to everyone who participated and to Lake Champlain Basin Program and New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) for providing funding for this wonderful seven-session series.

Cleaning gear before moving between water bodies is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of invasive species. AFC's river steward how easy it is to clean gear with our wader wash stations.

We had a great time talking about aquatic insects with anglers at this year's Ausable River Two-Fly Challenge. ๐Ÿค“ It's always fun to hear people "ooooo" and "ewwww" when they take a look at their favorite insects under the microscope.

As the whole landscape comes alive this spring, it's easy to put thoughts of winter road salt usage aside - but it is so important to keep it on our radar! Adirondack rivers, lakes, and ponds provide drinking water to our communities, support the thriving tourism industry that is essential to the regional economy, and are also the headwaters of nearly every major river system in NY state. Protecting the quality of these waters is important for all Adirondackers and for NY state as a whole. A new bill is circulating in Albany: the Road Salt Right to Know Act. If signed into law, this legislation would establish a statewide system to ensure agencies and departments calibrate their road deicing equipment and report the amount of deicing material used. Please join us in urging our representatives in Albany to pass this practical, science-based approach to improving management of winter roads while keeping drivers, vehicles, infrastructure, and Adirondack freshwaters safe.

Do you have a river or stream winding through your property? If so, consider reaching out to us for a free Stream Wise assessment. For the fifth year in a row, we are partnering with Lake Champlain Basin Program to help landowners protect and strengthen the health of rivers and streams through the Stream Wise program. We listen to landowner concerns or questions, walk the property to take a look at vegetation within the streamside buffer, and provide a detailed report with expert guidance on how to improve or maintain buffer resilience and stability. It's easy to participate - just reach out to our Stewardship Manager at [email protected] to secure your place on our schedule.

Last week, Carrie and Liz attended a benthic macroinvertebrate (aquatic insect) taxonomy and sampling course in the mountains of North Carolina, working alongside environmental biologists from across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Our staff are always grateful for opportunities to learn and deepen skill sets that support the freshwater research and habitat recovery work we're doing in the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain Basin.
