Neighborhood House

Neighborhood House We provide transformational programs that positively impact low-to-moderate income communities.

Neighborhood House is a non-profit, social service agency with locations in Wilmington and Middletown (Delaware). Founded by the United Methodist Women's Home Missionary Society in 1927, the agency provides care and support for low-to-moderate income residents living in New Castle County. Operating on a foundation of Christian principles, Neighborhood House pursues two primary purposes: To assist

and guide people in finding their own paths of self-awareness, self-sufficiency, and success; and to provide leadership, support, and advocacy for a comprehensive approach to community and economic development. Better housing, family unity, education, counseling, recreation, neighborhood development, and racial and cultural understanding, as well as spiritual and emotional enrichment, are important aspects of the programs and services we offer.

Turns out eight weeks at Neighborhood House results in a serious uptick in grinning. Side effects may also include a boost in confidence, improved social skills, and momentum heading into the new school year.

We love our summers around here, and it's because of who we get to spend time with.

There's a look kids get the first time they see a snakeskin or a giant bug. Their expressions get caught between "that's so cool" and "there's no way I'm touching it."

We saw that happen over and over again this summer, when our young people visited the DuPont Environmental Education Center β€” a place that encourages hands-on learning.

No matter your age, there's no substitute for seeing the world up close.

There's a certain pride that comes from watching this crew figure it out.

They knew that a warm summer afternoon would be good for business, so they set up a lemonade stand and went to work.

When you see that kind of go-getter energy, you can't help but root for them.

Whether it was P.J. Funnybunny's Bag of Tricks, Creepy Carrots!, or How I Became a Pirate, every young reader found something they wanted to take home.

Kids read more when they get to choose the stories, so at our Summer Book Fair, we filled the tables with dozens of titles and let them decide. Watching them pick the books they're interested in never gets old.

When you were their age, what was the book you couldn't put down?

Tomorrow is the last day of our Summer Enrichment Program, and we're not ready for how quiet the hallways and classrooms will be on Monday.

It's hard to believe eight weeks can go by so fast, but when they're this full, no wonder. Our days were packed with field trips, fitness classes, art projects, and everything in between.

We had so much fun together, and none of it happened by accident. Our staff worked hard all summer long. Parents and caregivers got their kids out the door every morning. And the kids themselves β€” they brought energy and heart to every activity.

We'll miss the excitement around here for sure, but we're confident that this group of smart, creative young people is going places. πŸ’š

This one came down to the wire.

When the Matching Gift Challenge ended last month, our community had come through in a big way. We met our goal, but not without help from so many of you.

To everyone who gave, shared a post, or told a friend about the work we do here in Southbridge β€” thank you!

Read the rest of the story at the link below.

In June, a generous supporter pledged $15,000 to Neighborhood House. There was only one catch: To unlock their gift we would need to ask our community to match it. So we shared the news, along with why the timing mattered. Like our neighbors, we were absorbing across-the-board cost increases in ever...

Don't let the preschool search sneak up on you.

If you have a little one at home, you know how important it is to get them off to a strong start. That's what our preschool is here for.

Right now, we have immediate openings for families who qualify for Purchase of Care. The link below has all the details.

If you've spent any time trying to find a preschool in Wilmington, you already know it's harder than it should be. Delaware doesn't fund preschool the way it funds K-12. There's no universal program and no single place to apply. What exists instead is a patchwork β€” district programs, private provid...

We're nearing the end of our sixth week of Summer Enrichment, and it's been SO MUCH FUN.

Bingo. Roller skating. STEAM builds with marshmallows, toothpicks, and pipe cleaners. Culture Club. Golf lessons in the community room. Art projects that took over every flat surface. Even vision boards that gave us a peek at who these kids are becoming.

After tomorrow, there's just two weeks left, and while we're in no rush to wrap things up, we know we've got a lot of people to thank for an already great summer. To everyone who's made it happen β€” staff, parents, and kids alike β€” thank you!
