In 1860, the city of Wilmington set aside 15 acres as a burial ground for its African American residents. More than 160 years later, Pine Forest Cemetery still holds generations of Wilmington’s Black community, including families who sought refuge on these grounds during the 1898 massacre and coup.
Historian Dr. Jan Davidson shares some of what makes Pine Forest one of the most significant historic sites in our city.
